Topic: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Hello,

When I try to boot gparted-live-0.16.2-11, my computer just restarts. No error messages, just a brief blank screen and restart.

1. Happens to both gparted-live-0.16.2-11-i486.iso and gparted-live-0.16.2-11-amd64.iso

2. I can boot any other CD/DVD device without any problem (O.S. Installation CD's, LiveCD's, etc.)

3. According to md5sum hashes, everything seems ok:

mint@newage /home/virtual $ md5sum gparted-live-0.16.2-11-amd64.iso

[ Processors 1, 2, 3... - Information included to see that I'm able to boot the x86_64 but the same problem happens with the x86 anyway]

mint@newage /home/virtual $

4. Using Linux Mint + Brasero 3.4.1 to burn the media. I'm using the minimum speed (8x) and burnproof.

5. The CD seems to be read ok, just the boot doesn't work:

Any ideas about what could be happening? I've never had such problems booting any other Live Media before...

Thanks!

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

GParted Live 0.16.2-11 contains an updated version of syslinux (6.02) with some patches.  It is possible that there is some incompatibility with this boot loader and your computer.

Can you try booting the Live CD on another computer?

What computer/motherboard are you using?

Would you be able to try booting from USB?
See GParted Live on USB.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Thanks for the quick reply!

I am pleased to inform that gparted-live-0.16.2-11-i486 on USB worked fine and gave me the boot screen.

Oddly, the CD worked on an older computer, but still reboots mine.

I don't know if it has anything to do, but maybe it's trying to access a video mode that my Monitor/Video Card does not support?

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Could you please tell me your machine's model? Maybe we can find a similar one here to test.
BTW, do you know if your machine uses BIOS or UEFI?

Steven.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

OK, thanks.
So is older version of GParted live working there? e.g. GParted live 0.16.2-1b?
I am trying to isolate the problem. To see if it's syslinux/isolinux issue or linux kernel issue.

Steven.

I will try and see. As soon as I have a result, I'll get back to you.

What I know so far:

- The md5 checksums of the LiveCD are ok (.iso downloaded and burned) and it opens on my O.S., so it doesn't seem to be a media/burning problem;
- The LiveCD works on an older computer than mine (2-3 years older);
- The LiveCD doesn't work on mine, rebooting it indefinitely without any error message;
- BUT the USB boot of the same version oddly works fine;
- Intel chipsets usually don't have any problems with Linux (actually AFAIK they are known to be the most supported);
- Linux usually doesn't just hang up without giving any error message so that's pretty odd to me.

I'm very far from being an expert, but what about video changes between versions? (framebuffer, etc.)

Maybe it's trying to access a video mode that is not supported by my monitor/video card ( 1920 x 1080 + NVIDIA Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] (rev a1) )

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Hello... And sorry for the double post but I have interesting updates:

gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486

I've tried booting but received the following error message:

ISOLINUX 5.10 2013-06-04 ETCDisoLinux: Disk error 01, AX = 42C9, drive FE

At first, it would seem like a media/burner error, but:

1. The CD boots fine on the older computer.

2. I have tried with 2 different CD/DVD writers, one of them brand new.

3. The CD opens fine and shows its contents on my O.S. file manager.

4. And finally, maybe the most important:

mint@newage /home/virtual $ md5sum gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso
a2b1a962a7d8df4aab68c22618d7cb2c gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso
mint@newage /home/virtual $ cat CHECKSUMS.TXT | grep a2b1a962a7d8df4aab68c22618d7cb2c
a2b1a962a7d8df4aab68c22618d7cb2c gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso
mint@newage /home/virtual $ ls -l gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso
-rw-r--r-- 1 mint mint 165675008 Nov 15 21:35 gparted-live-0.16.2-1b-i486.iso
mint@newage /home/virtual $ dd if=/dev/cdrw3 bs=165675008 | md5sum
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
165675008 bytes (166 MB) copied, 49.4541 s, 3.4 MB/s
a2b1a962a7d8df4aab68c22618d7cb2c -
mint@newage /home/virtual $

So I've tried to downgrade to one more:

gparted-live-0.16.1-1

It worked fine! Opened X, Desktop, etc.

-----------

So, in summary:

gparted-live-0.16.2-11 CD DOESN'T WORK: Automatic Reboot with no error message.

gparted-live-0.16.2-11 USB WORKS

gparted-live-0.16.2-1b CD DOESN'T WORK: ISOLINUX 5.10 2013-06-04 ETCDisoLinux: Disk error 01, AX = 42C9, drive FE

gparted-live-0.16.1-1 CD WORKS (and maybe previous versions too)

So the problem must have begun with 0.16.2.x and seems to be limited to the LiveCD media (USB versions unaffected).

I think I gave all the data possible about my hardware in the hwinfo output on my second post, but feel free to ask any additional questions or tests. Should it be filed as a bug?

Thanks!

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Unfortunately neither Steven Shiau (Live image maintainer) or myself have been able to replicate these boot problems on any of our production or test PC's.  This makes the problem very hard to troubleshoot.  ;(

Since the GParted Live and Clonezilla Live images are based on upstream Debian Live, we can hope that the problem will be resolved upstream soon.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

I was having issues booting recent GParted Live releases myself on some 2004-era Dell desktops, and tracked it down to a problem with ISOLINUX versions 5.01 and higher (http://www.syslinux.org/archives/2013-N … 21197.html). The SYSLINUX team is working on a fix (and has been successful so far). [s]but for now I have a modified iso for GParted 0.16.2-11 i686 PAE posted for anyone who needs it right away (uses ISOLINUX 4.07, works); see the last link on that page.[/s] EDIT: I have taken down the old modified image since the recent images with ISOLINUX 6.03 work just fine.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Thank you Christopher for the syslinux update.  Recently Steven created a gparted-live-016.2-12 image (in the testing directory) if you have a chance to try it out.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

I just want to add my own experience to this, having seen several attempts fail this morning.
I've received the blackout/reboot response on my own PCs with...

16.2.11 i486 & i686 variants - CD only, on spare USB to test no spare older PC to test.

Already had issues with 16.1.1 - very slow start-up could have been disc errors but abandoned with  no time to diagnose.

Eventually reverted down to version 14.1.6 i486 successfully, now using Gparted on both machines successfully.

Configuration is CPU: Intel i7
M.Board is Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD5
BIOS:  unknown, original default.

I can only conclude is that something in the latest cycle No. 16 of Gparted is causing selective boot failures.

Will have to wait until this is updated.

Hope this was of help.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

If you wish to try, there are newer releases available for download in the testing directory while we prepare for the 0.17.0 release.

Thanks, but I'm happy with the solution I've got now. (Maybe if I have time over the holidays I'll test if for you.)

I did follow the earlier correspondent's advice and tried out a USB pen drive.  This did work correctly with version 16.2.11, so I assume it's an issue with interacting on CD/DVD drives and look forward to a successful solution in future versions.

Okay, I've now had a chance to load gparted-live-0.17.0-beta2-1-i486.iso onto a rewritable CD and found it too does not work in my drive (an LG BH10LS30 Blu-ray Rewriter), same situation as previous version.

Haven't an opportunity to evaluate it on a USB pen drive but guess it will perform correctly if version 16... is working for me.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Thank you for reporting back with your findings.  Hopefully upstream Debian will be able to resolve this problem in the near future.  You might consider trying Debian Live and if it does not boot on your system then report the bug to Debian.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Would you be able to try the new gparted-live-0.17.0-2 (includes syslinux 6.03-pre1) that Steven Shiau created?

I'm pleased to inform that both the CD and USB versions of gparted-live-0.17.0-2-i686-pae booted fine. So, whatever problem was, it seems to have been fixed.

The only minor issues I've found is that the USB version didn't give me the X screen, but the text login screen, and the CD version booted fine until X, but I was unable to use the internet. Tried to configure it manually on ifconfig and editing /etc/resolv.conf, but the lack of the command ping made me unable to test why it was still not working.

Anyway, I'm glad it was solved! smile

If you wish to make a x86_64 release of the same version, I would be glad to test too on both CD and USB.

Best regards.

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Thank you for testing this new image.

I have notified Steven of your positive test results with an eye towards creating testing images of all architectures (i486, i686-pae, and x86_64).

Re: Problems Booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

The version using syslinux 6.03-pre1 is available here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gparte … /0.17.0-3/
Please give it a try and let us know the results.
Thanks.

Steven.
