Topic: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

I installed GParted Live on a 4 GB USB stick using Tuxboot in Windows, and it appeared to be successful. When I boot from the USB, I get three copies of what appears to be the right screen all next to each other and only filling about the top sixth of the screen. The rest of the screen is black. I can try to take a photo and upload it somewhere if my explanation isn't clear, but basically the menu I assume is supposed to be filling the whole monitor instead appears three times, and too small to read.

Hitting any of the options on this menu does not change the graphical issue. I have also tried switching from UEFI to Legacy boot mode, but this doesn't help. I know there is advice for fixing graphical issues on the Tips page, but the text on the menu that boots up is so small that I can't even read any of the options.

I am using GParted Live version 0.14.1-6, and I am trying to boot it on a Lenovo Ideapad Y580.

Edit: I get the same effect when booting from a CD.

Have you tried pressing enter at each prompt to select the default options?
Does this permit GParted Live to boot?
What does the screen look like after it has booted?

Re: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

I use myself the following in case of graphics problems, and it mostly works.

- Follow the first option (above line) in the boot menu.
- Press enter (the default settings) for the keyboard mapping and language. The screen goes to the text mode.
- In selecting the graphics driver, give 1 (Forcevideo) instead of the default 0 (automatic configuration).
- in the prompts that follow, select the default  answers (VESA, 1024x768, 24bit color).
I am not sure if the 1024x768 resolution is the best for long shaped screens. I don't remember the available resolutions.

Re: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

First of all, I just tested with a CD and I get the same effect, so I don't think it's a problem with burning the ISO.

I tried all the default options after putting in 1 for Forcevideo, and after selecting the default color depth, I got some scrolling text that ended with something like "Server terminated with error (1), linking log file". I don't remember the exact words and I couldn't read all of it clearly, so some of that might be wrong. The graphical issue never changed.

Edit: The fact that it won't boot suggests the graphical thing is just a symptom of a bigger problem. Would posting the details of my processor and video card and such help? Is there a way to find this log file it's talking about from Windows? I've looked through the files that are on the disk but none of them look particularly useful. Would there be any use in trying some older version of GParted to see if anything different happens?

Re: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

I found the following specs for this computer:

SPEC DATA:Lenovo IdeaPad Y580
...
Screen Size: 15.6 inches
Screen Type: Widescreen
Native Resolution: 1920 x 1080
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M
Graphics Memory: 2048

I hope our llive media specialists could have some more ideas about.

Did you ever try to boot other live media  on this computer?

Re: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

I successfully booted an Arch Linux live cd without any issues that I could see. I guess I could use that to do partitioning but I have no idea how to use the command line partition tools and I don't want to destroy my computer.

GParted can be used from many GNU/Linux distributions, so you should be able to use it from Arch Linux as well.

You might also try booting and using the System Rescue CD which also contains GParted.

Re: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

Could you give Debian live (upstream) a try:
http://live.debian.net/cdimage/release/ … esktop.iso
or
http://live.debian.net/cdimage/release/ … onfree.iso
If it works, then the issue is definitely on GParted live. If Debian live fails, then we have to report the issue to Debian.
Thanks.

Steven.

Re: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

The Arch Linux live cd is not a fully functional OS like many other distros have, and it doesn't have GParted included. It's just sort of a basic tool to help download and install the actual OS. I will try the Debian CD and Rescue CD though and report back.

Re: Strange graphical issue when booting GParted live from USB or CD

burkaman i used Gparted on a 40 Gig IBM Think Pad. It was on
a Live Knoppix CD and worked great. I now have a Dell with a 12 gig, 5 is non US NTFS Windows XP and 7 gigs is OpenBSD 5.2 with multi partitions. I used command line fdisk and disklabel for those. Ive never tried Gparted live so I just downloaded the AMD after finding out about the limitation. Does not read to be a video encryption issue and BSD has a IBM package for a known bug though i would have to check. Have disabled Legacy USB in bios if not using a USB keyboard?
Have you disabled infra-red if in a crowded area with phones?
