Topic: Error when growing file system to fill partition

I'm not sure if what I was trying to do was even possible but I was trying to use the Gparted on a Linux Mint 12 live CD to shrink a Windows XP partition before I went ahead with the Linux Mint install.  When I started the resize operation, I got an error and when I checked the details I see that the last operation being performed was that Gparted was attempting to grow the file system to fill the partition.  I'm really not sure why this would be happening in the first place since all I was trying to do was shrink the size of the XP partition and it was to my understanding that there shouldn't be any need for it to fill the whole partition.

Can anyone tell me if this is happening because I am using the Gparted on the Linux Mint Live CD or if I am doing something wrong?

I tried doing it two ways...

1.  Shrink the XP partition and leave the rest as unallocated space to be formatted during the Mint install
2. Shrink the XP partition and format the remaining unallocated space into an ext4 formatted space for Mint and 3 GB for swap

Thanks in advance!

Re: Error when growing file system to fill partition

I don't know the GParted version in the Linux Mint 12 live CD.
The use of specific operations and options (among them the alignment option) could create more than one operations in older GParted versions (i.e. move & resize ... ).

To shrink an XP partiton (ntfs or fat32) is possible, if the partition is "clean" (without errors and after a normal system shutdown). Otherwise, you need to run the chksdk /f command from the DOS window. It isn't necessary to defragment the partition, nevertheless previous defrag can help to a faster resize.

Win xp and operating systems of those years usually default to the "cylinder" alignment for the partitions, with the first one starting at the sector 63. Newer operating systems like win vista & 7 or the late Ubuntu Linux versions default to the MiB alignment to be compatible with the newest hard drive generations (SSD and the new 4096 byte drives. So, GParted defaults to the MiB. To work with older style partitions, it is better to use the "cylinder" option or aling to Nothing.
You can guess the exact alignment of your partitions from the output of the Linux command
sudo fdisk -lu
that gives the partition limits in sector precision. The cylinder alignment uses multiples of 255x63=16065 sectors.
The MiB alignment uses multiples of 8 sectors.

The only way to know what exactly GParted did or tried is to read the detail file.

After the end of the performed operations, you have an option to save the GParted detail file.
This file (in html format) is kept in the live filesystem (i.e. in RAM) and is lost by shutting the system down. So, to keep this file you have to mount a storage medium (usually USB stick, floppy disk, external hard drive, or even an internal hard drive) to copy it there.
So, if you didn't stop the system, you could be able to copy this file.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***

Re: Error when growing file system to fill partition

<snip...> shrink a Windows XP partition before I went ahead with the Linux Mint install.

You haven't done anything wrong per se.  It is best to use the latest GParted version though since many bugs have been fixed since version 0.8.1.

The last grow or maximize operation is part of the legacy of cylinder alignment to ensure that the file system did indeed use all of the space within the partition.

Newer versions of GParted do a better job of calculating the cylinder boundaries and hence the last maximize operation is no longer required.  This "redundant" grow operation has been removed in the GParted 0.11.0 release.  The most recent release of GParted is now 0.12.0.  The relevant bug report can be viewed at the following link:
