Topic: External USB Hitachi Turo 2.5" HDD Supported?

The latest Gparted 11.0-7 (live CD) doesn't see see my new Hitachi 2.5" HDD.

I've tried connecting the HDD on both USB 3.0 connector, and also on USB 2.0 connector, without success.

If this HDD is in fact supported, how do I get Gparted 11.0-7 (live CD) to see the HDD?

Re: External USB Hitachi Turo 2.5" HDD Supported?

More info on the HDD: Hitachi Turo mobile Pro 2.5"; USB 3.0 (per Hitachi "USB 3.0 compliant, USB 2.0 compatible"); 7200rpm; 500GB

If above Hitachi isn't supported, how about other brands of external 2.5" HDD that have USB 3.0?

Re: External USB Hitachi Turo 2.5" HDD Supported?

In general, there are no particular problems with 2,5" USB drives. Some late problems concern 3TB hard drives, external and internal ones (the problem is related to poor compatibility with most of the older hardware and software).

I found that there was an issue for this hard drive on Ubuntu Linux, however I found a report (Newegg reviews) on installing Ubuntu Linux on such a Touro drive and using it as boot and system hard drive!  The hard drive seems to work on other Linux flavours.
Perhaps it is related to some specific kernel.

Can you try it please, with no other USB devices connected on the computer?

3TB HDD uses Advanced Format (4k sectors). I'd be very surprised if any current 2.5" USB external HDD uses 4k sectors, as even the biggest current one is only 1.5TB. I prefer ~500GB 2.5" drive as they have fewer platters and run cooler.

I saw that same comment on newegg by user Kendo: "This drive does NOT work on Ubuntu Linux as of 10/8/2011."

Despite Kendo's comment, I tried Ubuntu 11.10 live-CD yesterday, and (like Gparted 11.0-7) it didn't see the drive.

Is there some command line option with Gparted that I need to use to see this drive?

Anyhow I just downloaded the current Fedora16 iso default version, 32 bit. I'll make a boot CD of it and try it in a few hours.

Again, the current/latest Gparted 11.0-7 doesn't seem to see this Hitachi Turo external HDD. So if it is not compatible with both the current Ubuntu and the current Gparted, I'm going to return it and take the restocking loss.

Do you, or anyone else, have actual experience using a 2.5" external HDD that works via USB 3.0 port on a mobo?

What brand(s) of external 2.5" HDD work with Linux and Gparted? (USB 3.0 only, please)

An update; I tried booting Fedora with the external Turo drive, but without success. No big surprise as Fedora is Red Hat's trial area and tends to be buggy.

I then tried Debian 6.0.3 32bit and that sees the external Turo drive. smile

To repeat a question: Is there some command line option with Gparted that I need to use to see this drive?

There are discussions in the Ubuntu forum too.

I understood that a solution was proposed, that worked at least in some cases. I don't know if it can be applied as a command line option or editing of some configuration file.  Our Live cd specialist could give a way to go, I hope.

I thing the problem isn't related to GParted, it is related most probably to some settings of the live cd operating system.
The actual GParted livecd is Debian based.

I'll wait for input from your "Live cd specialist" for Live Gparted opinions. smile

FWIW Debian/Gnome 6.0.3 (1.1GB download iso) offers 8 easy boot choices, including Live and Live 686.

"Live 686" only sometimes works for me due to me having a very recent socket AM3+ AMD FX-6100 cpu (bull-dozer).

"Live" always boots; and when I have the external Touro drive plugged in to a USB 2.0 connection it actually sees the drive. smile

Since I'm going to install Linux to an older AMD socket AM3 mobo, this whole thing may be moot as I've got confidence that I can reformat this drive to have a large fat32 partition. smile

Re: External USB Hitachi Turo 2.5" HDD Supported?

Can you try the latest GParted Live 0.11.0-10?

GParted Live is based on Debian Live.

Also what is the output from the following command:

sudo parted -l

GParted Live is based on Debian Live.

It's only 29 days newer than the prior Gparted Live 11.0-7 release that I just tried.

What makes you think that 11.0-10 will now see my external Hitachi USB drive?

Running Gparted 11.0-7?

If yes, how do I get to a command line when booted from a Live-CD of Gparted 11.0-7?

Is 29 days too short? There were in the past newer versions within 1 or 2 days!
Newer version means usually new kernel.

For the command line, there is the "Terminal" in the GParted live screen.
If the latest version solves the problem, there is longer need for this.
If the problem insists, you can check both to see if the result is the same.
