Topic: [Solved] How to get unallocated space out of an extended partition

Hi All,

I'm an IT support tech trying to free up some space on a client's server. I bet the next step is easy but I can't find out what I am doing wrong.

The specs:
-Windows Server 2003
-Two partitions, C and D.
-C is out of space and D has much free space
-I resized D which now has 20G of unallocated space in D's extended partition
-This unalloc'd space is to the left of the used space in the partition
-The D partition is to the right of the C partition

Apparently I need to get the unalloc'd space out of the extended partition that holds D before I can grow C into the space. I can't find/understand the answers that Google hits provide. Can anyone help me with this ? I'd love to be able to return the server by Monday morning !

Thanks all ahead of time,
Denis

Select the extended partition and grab the left hand side and move it to right.  Then the unallocated space should be outside of the extended partition and immediately beside the primary partition C:.

Hi gedakc,

I was just about to marked this solved when I saw your post. Thanks for getting back to me. When I tried to move the partition handle all the way to the right I got an error about start is after finish. I found another post and did as he suggested. That was I pulled the handle almost all the way to the right and that worked !

Thanks for all the help you give on this forum gedakc,
Denis

You can insert it by editing the title in your first post in the thread.
