Topic: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing : Attempt to kill init!

I downloaded the iso for version 0.2.5-2 (as its only 30MB and loads really fast, and shutsdown really fast and easy).

I extracted the iso, and used CDRPACK to make an new iso. I didn't modify or changed anything.

But when I boot up with it I get the following:
Booting from /dev/hdc...
/linuxrc: /linuxrc: 139: cannot create /dev/null: Read-only file system
/linuxrc: /linuxrc: 139: cannot create dev/console: Read-only file system
Kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill init!

So I don't understand whats wrong as I didn't modify anything. I did the same process with other versions of GParted (such as 0.2.5-3) with no errors, but with older versions like 0.2.5-2 and 0.2.5-1 I am. As a note the directory structure of the CD changed majorly from 0.2.5-2 to 0.2.5-3, the former having a bunch of folders and files.

What do I need to do to get this to work?

Thanks in advance.

The Live CD image for version 0.2.5-2 is very old and is no longer maintained.

The current release of GParted Live is 0.6.2-2.

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I know. But I don't have the room on my drive of the new 120MB+ version - as 0.2.5-2 is just under 30MB. Plus I like how the menu system and such is in this version. The fact I click the shutdown button and it reboots - not asking me a bunch of questions about how I want to reboot.

So I figure that there must be someone here who used to use this older version and had made their own ISOs from the download.
After thinking about it, I think the Title of this thread is not proper  - so I will re-post it with a more appropriate title.

Is it possible to get a filesystem.squashfs version of 0.2.5-2?

Re: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing : Attempt to kill init!

I am afraid that it would be very hard to even contact the developers of these old versions.
Anyway, the older versions of GParted and GParted livecd are accessible in the Sourceforge download center from 2004 and 2005 respectively (go to the GParted download page, and choose to view all files; then you have access to the older versions, source and iso).
Version 0.2.5-2 is from the summer 2006.

Re: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing : Attempt to kill init!

I know about the old ISO, those are the ISOs I was talking about in my email.
When I extract the fuiles out of the ISO in order to make a modifed IDO with my options (laguage, keyboard, etc) I get this error message. When I just use the downloaded ISO it works perfect, but the one I 'm creating it crashing. For now I am not modifying anything in any of the files am I'm just trying to get the ISO making to work. When I do this with later versions which has the gparted.dat or  the filesystem.squashfs my ISOs I make work perfectly. But with is older file system is hangs.

Any suggestions on how to get it to work? And how do I get in contact with the developers of those older versions?

Thanks in advance

Re: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing : Attempt to kill init!

Searching the oooold history files, we find that these 0.2.5-x versions were developed by Bart Hakvoort (plors), creator of the GParted project, and Patrick Verner. There are no news or address for Bart. Patrick Verner created his own software project, Parted Magic, that uses the GParted core and other tools. So, you could try to contact Patrick at the Parted Magic project.

If you have the time to contribute to the development work, it would be happy to communicate your solutions to the GParted project. smile
