Topic: [SOLVED]Missing operating system Dell E1505

Hi,
I have Dell Inspiron E1505.
As it comes with all primary partition.
I am trying to make secondary partitions using gparted to install linux fc6

I made a gparted live cd using the iso image available for download.
I rebooted with bootable CD on the drive and selected cd drive as boot media location
But the sytem does not boot instead it gives message like
"Missing operating system" and just gets stuck there.

TIA

Re: [SOLVED]Missing operating system Dell E1505

First, you have to check the downloaded ISO file with md5, to be sure that your download is good.

How did you make the LiveCD?
With Nero and other windows programs, you must choose "Burn Image", *not* just make a data cd with the ISO file inside.
There is even a free program to just burn Image CDs.

You have perhaps to edit your BIOS setup, putting the CDROM drive prior to the hard disk in the boot priority. Next, you reboot the computer.

Thanks for reply....

Making the live CD->
I used roxy CD creator
I choose the option make data CD-> make bootable cd.
Is it correct??

In in E1505 inspiron on pressing f12 we enter boot select menu where we can directly choose the media to boot from (HDD/CD-DVD/USB)

One thing that I have missed is checking the downloaded image with md5...

Re: [SOLVED]Missing operating system Dell E1505

I'm afraid this doesn't give the right LiveCD. Bootable CD and ISO image aren't the same.
Please, search for an option like "burn image" or "burn ISO".

I think that roxy CD creator 5 does the job.
Otherwise, you can use the free program BURNISO.

Re: [SOLVED]Missing operating system Dell E1505

Thanxs ...
I made the image cd as u said and now I am able to boot.

But still I see one more problem.. Sorry if this post does not come under the topic.

As I told I have dellE1505 which comes with all primary partitions.

I deleted one primary partition and shrink the existing OS using vista utility. So I have two unallocated regions of memory.
Now I boot using gparted and I can see the unallocated space.

I try to make a new partition out of it but when choosing the partition type option I can only select primary.
Extended and logical are not selectable.

TIA

Re: [SOLVED]Missing operating system Dell E1505

Do you see exactly the same partitions in Gparted and in the windows disk management console?

Can you write here the information about all the partitions that Gparted sees on the disk, please?

Re: [SOLVED]Missing operating system Dell E1505

Hi,
First of all thnx to gparted n team ..
Finally I have successfully installed fc6 after partitioning the drive.

I will like to share some of my experience.

In dell inspirion E1505 dell media direct (DMD)was preinstalled. What it has done was, made an ext partion of 2 gb at the end of the drive and installed DMD.(This I saw using DMD)

Because there and existing extended partition at the end of drive I was not able make extended partition any where else (This is how interpreted the happening plz comment if my interpretation is wrong )

So i deleted DMD,
installed vista on the complete chunk
resized vista using its own utility.
rebooted using gparted and made ext and logical partitions .
rebooted using fc6 CD and completed the installation
Things are working as of now. However I have not checked Wi-fi on fc6. I hope it will be fine.
