Topic: [SOLVED] NTFS resize problem

Hello everyone
i have a question about resizing NTFS partition
the examples that i found on web about shrinking NTFS partition are all using "Free Space Following"
and they said you need to defragment your harddrive b4 shrinking
here is my question
i would like to ask if i use "Free Space Preceding", will the file/INODE move backward successfully?
i really worry about doing this operation, although i will backup b4 doing this operation
i got two OS on that harddrive, it is better not to crash the MFT

if i can resize using "Free Space Preceding", should i do the defragment?
thanks in advance, and sorry for my poor english

Re: [SOLVED] NTFS resize problem

Take care to not forget reboots after each step. Not only 1 reboot, but 2 reboots at least. It takes perhaps long but it's much better than re-install w!n ;-)

A good idea would be to take backup of the MBR (master boot record) too, before.

It doesn't make any difference. But seriously consider making a backup.
You may use clonezilla to do it : it is the best free tool ever done for this !

Re: [SOLVED] NTFS resize problem

yeah, i finish my resize, thanks guys
with 1st restart chkdsk
2nd restart, new hardware installed
3rd restart, normal usage ^^

btw, i got a black background screen using first option of grub (something like autoconfig)
so i cant press the power button on screen after resize (pressed and nothing was shown)
so i do it by ctrl alt f1 and shutdown -r now

anyone got the same problem? i am using the latest LiveCD

You are not alone, dear! I had that, me too. It didn't happen in the previous version.  Not only with the 1st option, but with other options too. I killed X with control+alt+backspace, gave "exit" in the text screen terminal and then  gparted worked well. You can look at the following post, about this:

Re: [SOLVED] NTFS resize problem

Can you give the hardware of the computer, please?
Motherboard, processor, chipset, graphics card.
I try to see if it has to do with intel, or a specific chipset.
