Topic: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

Hi,

I'm getting this error on my Toshiba Laptop PC when booting Version 0.16.2 from a CD:

ISOLINUX 5.10 2013-06-04  ETCD isolinux: Disk Error 04, AX=4C29, drive FE

The boot stops at the error message.

Here's some background info:

I've been using Gparted Ver 0.14.1  for about a year with no problems on both of my PC's,  a custom-built Desktop and a Toshiba Laptop.

Laptop PC:

I recently downloaded the Iso file for Ver 0.16.2 and tried to boot from the CD today.  After encountering the error above, I installed my older ver 0.14.1 CD in my Laptop and it booted without problems.

The Ver 0.16.2 CD does boot up ok on my Desktop PC.

I downloaded Ver 0.16.2 again and burned another CD using a different CD Bruner Drive on my PC.  The error is still present on my Laptop PC.

Would you be able to try the latest GParted Live image from the Testing directory on the Download page?

Thanks for the reply smile.  I'll download that and try it at next opportunity.

Just to verify that I have the right download, is this the 0.16.2-9 version dated 2013-10-29 (date modified) ?

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

There is a newer one just released (0.16.2-11) if you can try that one.

I'll try that one when I get some time to download it.  For some reason, the download was taking a long time (est 35-40 min) so I had to abort it for now.

My 'net connection is working ok (I have FIOS 35/35 service) but this particular download was taking a lot longer than my previous Gparted downloads.

My previous Gparted downloads usually take a few seconds to complete.

I ran into a strange issue when I burned the earlier version 0.16.2-9 .  I use "Imgburn" to burn my Iso's.  I have 2 CD/DVD Burners on my PC.  I wasn't able to burn the Iso with one of my Drives but it worked on the other Drive.

[Edit] Looked like my 'net provider pipeline was sluggish for a little while today.  I re-tried the download and it worked ok.  Will burn Iso next.

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

Update:

I burned the newest lab version 0.16.2-11  and tried it on my Laptop but it won't boot.  The Laptop reverts to my HDD and boots as normal.

I use "Imgburn" freeware to burn my CD's.

I used one of my Verbatim CD-R's to eliminate a less-quality media issue and I burned the CD using my Laptop burner.

There's no error message or any Gparted screen appearing when the Latop tries to boot from the CD Drive.  It just boots to the HDD as normal.  My CD drive is being accessed (my BIOS Boot Priority is working ok) prior to reverting to my HDD boot.

I re-inserted my older CD version (gparted-live-0.14.1-6-i486) and it booted ok which I assume eliminates my Laptop as the issue with the newer versions not booting to my Laptop.

I'm not sure if the Laptop problem is a compatibility issue with the new Gparted versions.  I guess that's a possibility but I'm not knowledgeable with Linux and am only a lite Gparted user.  I use Gparted to format and remove partitions prior to cloning and testing recovered platform Images to my HDD.

My Laptop info:

OS: Window 7 x64

TOSHIBA LAPTOP MODEL Satellite L655-S5168
Processor: Intel i5 480  2.56 Ghz
RAM: 4 Gb  DDR3 1066 Mhz
Graphics: Intel

The way that I think I understand Linux boots is that it loads everything into one's PC RAM.  The HDD is not accessed. Is that accurate?

Gparted was recommended to me by my nephew and with the limited way that I use it, it works great smile.  I like the idea of formatting and removing partitions outside of Windows.

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

When GParted Live boots, it loads a small GNU/Linux distribution into your computer's RAM and does not write to your HDD unless you instruct GParted to do so.

If your laptop is booting directly to the hard drive when the GParted Live 0.16.2-11 CD is present, then that suggests that the laptop BIOS is not seeing the boot loader on the CD.  This new version using syslinux 6.02 with some patches so it is possible there is an incompatibility with the updated boot loader and your laptop.

Which architecture image are you using (i486, amd64, pae)?

Would you be able to try booting GParted Live from USB?
See GParted Live on USB.

See GParted Live on USB.

I'm using the i486 ISO downloads.

I believe you're right about the 0.16.2-11 boot loader incompatibility with my Laptop.  My other bootable media works ok on the Laptop, Acronis. Macrium Reflect, etc.

As long as I can boot with the older version gparted-live-0.14.1-6-i486 on my Laptop, I'm ok for now.  I have that ISO file saved on my HDD.

Flash Drive, I'll try that, loading onto it and booting.  I've never loaded a bootable media onto the Flash Drive so I'm reading the tutorials at the Gparted site.

The first thing that I read is that I'd need to create a FAT partition on the Flash Drive in order to load "Tuxboot" or use the other methods to install Gparted on my Flash Drive.  I'm guessing that this can be done using Gparted.

The Drive is currenly used as a mini-backup for my NTFS items so I'll need to obtain another Flash Drive to try this, unless there's a way to create a FAT partition alongside the NTFS partition on the Flash Drive.

This is getting into an area where I have no experience (custom partitioning) but I'd like to get up to speed with the basics about it so this sounds like I'll give this a try soon.

Regarding how Linux media loads into RAM, thanks for verifying how it works.  The reason that I was curious about this is that I recently booted from another Linux CD (not Gparted, another imaging/cloning media tool) and my Desktop PC behaved strangely after I booted back to my HDD.  I had a couple of minor issues that I had to fix, re-seating my 'net Ethernet connector to restore the Network Adapter enable, and I had to re-insert one of my USB cables to get Windows to recognize the device from that port.

Both issues hadn't been present prior to booting from that other Linux CD.  That's why I was curious about where a Linux bootable CD loads into one's PC.

I was surprised when that happened, since I hadn't seen that before, when I've booted from my other Linux-based CD's, ie, "Clonezilla", and my other Gparted CD's.

http://i43.tinypic.com/15o87wj.jpg for your replies and helpful info here.  I'm in the "first grade" compared to other members here smile, regarding custom HDD manipulating/partitioning.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

[Edit Update] I just checked my Flash Drive and it's already a FAT32 drive.  I'd not noticed that before today.  So I can proceed with the tutorial and download 0.16.11 to my drive.

Will that remove any other items that are on the Flash Drive?

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

If you use tuxboot to install GParted Live on the Flash Drive then it should not remove any of the other items on the Flash drive.  Having said that it would be best to make a backup first.  :-)

Another thing to try is to see if the Live CD will boot on some other computer that you might have access to.

Thanks,  yes, those Flash Drive items are backed up all over the place smile.  I guess I'm one of those "backup nuts".  I have 2 cloned HDD's that have been tested for any recovery needs as well as a few full-HDD images on an external HDD.

The Ver 0.16.2 did boot up ok on my Desktop PC.  I haven't tried the latest version on my Desktop.  I'll download the ISO and check that one out on the Desktop at next opportunity.

To summarize what I've seen:

Desktop PC:  Ver 0.16.2 boots ok.  My original Gparted version gparted-live-0.14.1-6-i486   works ok.

Laptop PC:    My original version gparted-live-0.14.1-6-i486  boots ok.  Ver 0.16.2-1b-i486 as well as 0.16.2-9 and 0.16.2-11  didn't boot.

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

Scoop,

I've had EXACTLY the same error when I've tried gparted-live-0.16.2-1b CD, and besides "disk error" being 01 instead of 04, the error output was exactly the same.

And possibly in a different architecture: Intel DP55WB [P55 Express Chipset]

I had also not success when booting gparted-live-0.16.2-11

Maybe it would be a good idea to take a look at my post and see if gparted-live-0.16.1-1 CD is the most recent version that works for you too. I believe/hope it would help the developers to track down the problem more easily:

http://i41.tinypic.com/defit.jpg for the info on your thread.

I hadn't seen that thread earlier.  It's good to know that my Laptop issue wasn't unique.

I'll try ver 0.16.1-1 to CD and see how that works.

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

I haven't tried Ver 0.16.1-1 to CD yet but I've noticed a little change with Ver  0.16.2  when I boot to my Desktop PC.

It always changes my screen resolution prior to the "keyboard definition" prompt screen.  I think it's changing the resolution to my native setting (1920x1080) for my monitor.

I just let it complete the load to the desktop and then I use the "Screen Resolution" icon to change my resolution back to what is set up on my Video Card for Windows.

Ver 0.14.1 doesn't change the resolution when booting to both of my PC's.

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

There have been many changes in the Linux world to graphic drivers and boot processes to handle EFI booting and still continue to support BIOS booting.

Unfortunately neither Steven Shiau (Live image maintainer) or myself have been able to replicate these boot problems on any of our production or test PC's.  This makes the problem very hard to troubleshoot.  ;(

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

Would you be able to try the new gparted-live-0.17.0-2 (includes syslinux 6.03-pre1) that Steven Shiau created?

Re: Error Booting Version 0.16.2-1b (i486)

Hello Gedakc,

I was getting a similar error with the latest tar ball from the gparted website.  I have a compaq nc6400 laptop.

I downloaded the version that Steven created and it worked perfectly, was able to successfully resize my partitions.

Regards,

Christopher
