Topic: gparted Live Media don't boot on macbook pro late 2010

I created two gparted live CDs with the iso image from sourceforge (version 0.8.0) and a live USB stick using tuxboot with the same version but neither one nor the other boot with my macbook pro (late 2010).
In case of the gparted live CDs, I can choose the CD as boot medium (showing a windows cd labeled gparted) at the options menu at boottime but when the apple appears during boot procedure it interchanges infinitely with a hold sign an don't boot.
In case of the gparted live USB stick, I can't even choose the USB stick as a boot medium

As I'm a relative newbie to mac os and macbooks, i don't know wether this is completely understandable or a real problem.

So my concrete questions:

1.) Should one or all of the created live media boot on my macbook pro at all?
2.) If yes, what is the problem?
3.) If not, is there another way to create a gparted live cd or usb stick that would work with my macbook pro?

Help is very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Re: gparted Live Media don't boot on macbook pro late 2010

Here I can successfully boot the GParted live 0.8.0-1 with a CD on my Mac mini.
Some hints for you:
1. Make sure your Mac is running Intel x86 CPU, not Power CPU.
2. Do a md5sum or sha1sum check about the downloaded iso file before you burn it
3. The USB flash drive created by tuxboot won't boot on intel-based Mac. It only works on x86 PC. So far we still have no idea how to make a bootable USB flash drive with syslinux for that. If you know how to make it, please let us know.

Re: gparted Live Media don't boot on macbook pro late 2010

@Steven: Thank you for your answers and hints

1. Make sure your Mac is running Intel x86 CPU, not Power CPU.

=> My Mac of course is a Intel Macbook Pro with Core i7 2.8 GHz, 8 GB Ram, OCZ Vertex 2 480GB (1st HD), Optibay WD Black Scorpio 500 GB (2nd HD). Is there maybe a problem booting from the external Superdrive due to the Optibay. On the other hand at least booting the Mac OS Installation Media was not a problem at all.

2. Do a md5sum or sha1sum check about the downloaded iso file before you burn it

=> I checked the md5 hash of the downloaded iso file before burning it to CD. It was correct. I didn't check the sha1 hash up to now. I will perform the check tomorrow and will get back here with the results.

3. The USB flash drive created by tuxboot won't boot on intel-based Mac. It only works on x86 PC. So far we still have no idea how to make a bootable USB flash drive with syslinux for that. If you know how to make it, please let us know.

=> Thank you for this definitive answer. I was afraid that would be the answer. I discussed this topic with my colleague. He is an absolute ubuntu/bsd specialist. Maybe he has an idea. If so i will tell you!

I am deeply relieved that booting GParted Live CD on my Macbook should be at least in theory no problem.

So I will repeat the whole procedure of loading, checking and burning the ISO image to CD again. Maybe it will work on second try. Hey, it's a computer problem. Chances are that it works.

Simon.

Re: gparted Live Media don't boot on macbook pro late 2010

Did you ever get a gparted-live cd to boot in your mac mini? I downloaded the iso, burned it to disk and tried to boot with my mac mini running snow leopard (intel core duo chip).  When I attempt to boot with the disk, a black window appears with a 1. and a 2. and a place to type but can't enter any key strokes. Any ideas on what's going wrong?
Thank you.

Re: gparted Live Media don't boot on macbook pro late 2010

I was about to post to the forum saying my Live USB stick on my Mac Mini 2,1 wouldn't work but it looks like this is a known issue.
I have a feeling if I burn it to a CD or DVD I'll get the same problem as the black window asking for an answer to the 1 or 2 question because that's what happened with a Linux Live CD I tried to boot from.

Anyone have ANY idea how to delete the partitions on my Mac and effectively leave it without an OS?
