Topic: Won't see CD as bootable

Real (old) newbie here.  I have burned the cd iso image exactly as it was downloaded and selected the appropriate drive to boot from, but all i get is a black screen which says:  "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."

Any help greatly appreciated.  I hace done the basics like ensured I am in the correct drive and that it is the one selected.  The CD has two folders named BOOT and SYSLINUX and a file named GPARTED.DAT

Thanks very much

Re: Won't see CD as bootable

The cd must be an "ISO Image" cd, not just a data cd.
Selection of boot device is done in the BIOS setup. To enter the BIOS setup you have to press a key just after powering the computer on.

Re: Won't see CD as bootable

Have burned a cd with the ISO image of GParted, as explained by Gizmo in his tech newsletter. When booting from the CD some text comes up (it is doing a lot of things apparently), and after a few seconds the screen is black and the system freezes. What could be wrong here? What further info do I have to submit?

Re: Won't see CD as bootable

Do you have any problem booting other CDs, like Knoppix or Linux install CDs? You have to select in the BIOS setup the CD or DVD drive as first in the boot order.

If this is an answer to my question, then

- there seems to be no trouble in booting from the cd, because the menu comes up with autoconfiguration etc - then when Enter is pressed at Autoconfiguration, some pages of text indicates something is going on - then: blank screen - computer freezes - only Reset button works ...

Re: Won't see CD as bootable

PS I just downloaded GParted-LiveCD-0.3.4-11, burned the iso image to a cd and booted from it - same result ...

Re: Won't see CD as bootable

I asked Gizmo (who recommended GParted in his tech newsletter) about the problem and he answered the following, which worked. So I quote it here for others to refer to:

-------------
GParted uses Gentoo Linux as a base. It looks like Gentoo is not installing on your system for whatever reason.

Sorting that out is big task with no guarantee of success.

Maybe you could try this:

http://www.partedmagic.com/

You may get the same problem though. If so you will have to go hunting for another Linux distro that has a live CD with GParted installed.

Re: Won't see CD as bootable

It seems that versions 0.3.4-5 to 0.3.4-8 boot easier to some systems (chipset and bios settings).
Partedmagic uses Gparted from other boot system.
The latest Ubuntu live+install cd (7.10) contains Gparted too.
