Topic: Can't move partitions, even though there is room

I have tried various ways to enlarge a foolishly small / root directory of 250 mb on my debian etch system. I have booted with a Knoppix live cd, which contains gparted, and am able to resize partitions at will, but can't move them once free space is opened up.

As well, I have tried to boot up with a newly burned gparted live cd and could never get it to work with my video.

The Space Before box is always greyed out, or at least the controls to allow me to MOVE a partition are disabled.

Why? Why can't I move partitions, but only resize them?

I am tempted to get Partition Magic's cd and boot up with it to move my partitions, but want to stick with all linux tools if I can.

Please advise!

Re: Can't move partitions, even though there is room

I'm affraid partition magic doesn't work very well with linux partitions.

Did you try VESA video driver? It usually works.
What is your hardware?

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***
