Topic: Can't start xserver with ATI x1900XT

Hi,

When I boot from the live CD I can't start xserver. It fails with no screens found with each driver I try. The Vesa driver doesn't fail, but my monitor goes into standby mode. It seems that it worked since the 'no screens found' error didn't occur, but my monitor doesn't receive a signal.

I had this same problem when installing Ubuntu and ended up having to use the 'alt cd' (Text Install) and manually downloading the fglrx driver via command line before I could get into xserver.

Any ideas?

TIA

Re: Can't start xserver with ATI x1900XT

I hope you already tried the various boot options in the initial screen.

You can try to kill x by pressing "ctrl+alt+backspace". Then you can give to the terminal the command "Fircevideo". It is a script that starts x and gparted, where you can choose the graphics driver and resolution.  You can select a rather moderate resolution, like 800x600 or 1024x768.
There is a vesa option, as well as ati I think.

Another possibility is to use 0.3.4-5 or 0.3.4-2 versions, that use other boot methods.
