problem booting

I previously was able to boot both the latest and directly previous versions, but now it hangs at this point in the booting process: "linux-initrd @ 0x17c8c000, 0x35766/insert similar memory address".  I've tried with and without acpi, pnp, different boot options, etc, no luck so far.  Any ideas?
