Topic: GParted-Clonezilla LIVECD Is born !

Hi all !
Because I think it is good to marry useful products, I decided to marry GParted and Clonezilla with the agreement of both Clonezilla-team and Plors (main GParted-dev).
It is hosting on clonezilla site : http://opensource.nchc.org.tw/GParted-Clonezilla/
ATM the iso is not stored on any other server, because all the files have been flushed by a provider ! !

The iso is a bit less than 130MO.
It is a Grub multiboot cdrom : in fact I just added Clonezilla-live to the boot options. This way, you can first make a backup of data, and rebooting work on your partitions ! Isn't it cool enough ?

Excellent work Larry!!!

The DRBL/Clonezilla team, agree 100% with mating such useful tools. In fact I was notified a few days before from Steven about a similar attempt they have, the DRBL-LiveCD. This is Clonezilla's bigger brother that supports more complex tasks that simple machine cloning. It can cope with massive cloning as a standard backup server in LiveCD form. It includes GParted 0.3.3. I had a chance to test it and it works fine (my last attempt was with the original {Clonezilla-LiveCD + GParted LiveCD} pair).

My original how-to based on my experiences backing-up and restoring openSUSE can be found for guidance here:

and a concatenated version is a tutorial (applicable to just about any distro and to any OS as well...) here:

Re: GParted-Clonezilla LIVECD Is born !

Is there a way to use this to make an image of a disk containing linux software RAID1 partitions and clone back to a new drive?  I have tried this with clonezilla before and it saw the underlying ext3 filesystem but did not reproduce the md superblock needed to make it be recognized at bootup.

Re: GParted-Clonezilla LIVECD Is born !

Hmmm...don't have any experience with RAID. My system is pure vanilla, with IDE disks. It is a good idea to send an e-mail to Steven Shiau (steven _at_ nchc org tw) about this. He can probably provide the answer...

Re: GParted-Clonezilla LIVECD Is born !

I found their mail list - I'll try there.  Actually I often clone machines built on raid1 partitions just by moving one of the mirrors to a different machine and rebuilding to new mirrors on both, but I'd also like an option to do it through a saved file image and the clonezilla approach doesn't have to copy the unused space.

Re: GParted-Clonezilla LIVECD Is born !

...very very true. Clonezilla is an excellent tool. If you do manage it, please be so kind to post results. I have a feeling there are a lot of users interested in using Clonezilla.

"Your feelings serve you right."
No, I'm not Yoda ... just wish if I was ...

Just confirming, there is a need.

Cheers and thanks for the work so far,

Re: GParted-Clonezilla LIVECD Is born !

I see that dd is included with Clonezilla. Would you consider adding ddrescue (the one by Antonio Diaz Diaz located at http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html) to Clonezilla? It's much faster than dd and has data recovery features as well.

Re: GParted-Clonezilla LIVECD Is born !

dd-rescue is included in GParted livecd : sys-fs/dd-rescue-1.10
