Topic: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

Hello

Just created a GP-CD and booted it. I get the typical Linux animal in the top left
corner of screen and a large amount of info scrolling up at surprisingly high
speed (on my slow CPU hmm ). But after cca 3 screen heights the process stops
with something like

Freeing unused kernel memory 388KB

... the end.  sad Just below I can type any garbage from keyboard but it has
no effect. CTL-ALT-DEL results in a reboot after some short activities.

What now ?  Bug ?

Tell me about your cpu please?
And amount of memory ?

Yes i guess it is the problem
Try to type "nocache" at prompt. I remember i set this option.
I will probably take a while to load, but should work wink

Linux is a famous memory and CPU hog sad

Try to type "nocache" at prompt.

What prompt ? Below the cake logo ? "nocache" -> NO effect sad

I will probably take a while to load, but should work

Doesn't. Please fix this BUG. I do not need it working on my low-end PC
by now (BTW: On the high-end one, it successfully squeezed the
silly almost 1 TB NTFS partition smile . ), but it is a serious bug and
should be fixed. Also, "system requirements" should be public.

Here it aborts ... shot ripped from your movie sad

Re: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

I perfectly run the livecd on PIII 500 mzh with 128 mo sdram, so don't say stupid things about linux and memory ! We are  *far* from the 2 GO DDR used by Vista$....

What about your iso burn ? Did you verify md5sum ?

Re: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

What about your iso burn ?

Not my first CD ... seems to work well. And same CD worked on other PC.

Did you verify md5sum ?

YES. Was correct after download.

perfectly run the livecd on PIII 500 mzh with 128 mo sdram

Please try less RAM and less CPU (PII, no SSE, no MMX, ...) also

don't say stupid things about linux and memory !

Stupid or not ... Linux does not need less than M$ competitors ... Win98
verified to run on 64 MB RAM (slow), reported even on 32 MB (don't want to see the
speed big_smile ), Windaube XP verified to run on 192 MB (unusably slow), reported
even on 128 MB (enjoy big_smile

Please look into the memory issues and publish system requirements - pushing
down to 64 MB RAM would be preferable ... and a possible out of memory problem should
report " out of memory " rather than simply abort hmm

I guess you seem to be the right man to improve this feature in this public livecd. Go ahead, please...
Unfortunately have no free time left to do such a work...

Re: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

I've just downloaded, and tried to boot 0.3.4-5 and get exactly the same problem.

I also tried changing the boot option from dochache to nocache, but that didn't make any difference.  It still hangs after typing:  Freeing unused kernel memory: 384k freed.

This is booting on an old AMD K6, with 128Meg of ram.

I just tried again, but with 256Meg.  No change.

Cheers.

Re: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

It doesn't come from memory, but from cpu cache.

So, is there anything I can try.

Cheers.

Re: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

ATM : no !
I am currently trying to build a livecd that can be run on x86. It will take some time.
You may try to use sysrecuecd from which GParted can be loaded. Be careful that parted is 1.7.1 on the version you will download : there are some issues when compiling GParted against parted-1.8.x

Re: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

Just for completeness.  I also cannot boot the latest g4l image either.

But, I can boot these:  knoppix, ubuntu, and slackware.

Cheers.

Re: Does NOT WORK AT ALL - booting aborts

Hello,

I had the same problem with 0.3.4-6 and 0.3.4-5 on my old VIA Epia 800.  Fortunately I was able to use the 0.3.2 release which worked fine.

Best,

Jean-Alain
