Topic: Question about amd64 versions

Hi, Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm a little confused.

For newer, 64 bit computers the amd64 version is suggested. When I get to the ../linux-image-amd64 page I am presented with two architecture options: amd64 and i386. As my computer has an Intel processor I would assume I would need the i386 version.

When I get navigated to http://sourceforge.net/projects/gparted … /0.17.0-4/ to download the .iso I see the file for the amd64 .iso, however there is no indication whether this is for amd64 or i386. Does it work for both or what? I don't want to waste time burning a CD that I cannot use.

Re: Question about amd64 versions

Hi Robb,

The i386 version should work on computers that boot using PC BIOS and have 368, 486, 586, 686, and higher processors (both 32 and 64 bit) from companies like Intel and AMD.
The i686 version should work on computers that boot using PC BIOS and have 686 and higher processors (both 32 and 64 bit) from companies like Intel and AMD.
The amd64 version should work on computers that boot using PC BIOS or UEFI and have 64 bit processors from companies like Intel and AMD.

Hopefully that answers your question.

OK, I think you're saying that if I d/l the gparted-live-0.17.0-4-amd64.iso it will work on my Lenovo with an Intel cpu. I'll try it. THX

Re: Question about amd64 versions

If both of your computers use 64 bit processors (either Intel of AMD), then the amd64 image is an excellent choice.  :-)
