Topic: Windows 8 + GParted 0.14.0-1 won't boot

I have recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed and would like to partition the HDD into 2 separate partitions c: and d:. The only problem is I cannot seem to get GParted to boot on my machine. I have used GParted before on several Windows XP, Vista and 7 machines without a problem.

My Windows 8 machine is set to boot from the ODD first then the HDD. When booting I see the Toshiba Leading Innovation logo but it then boots to Windows 8. All the other times I have run GParted, GParted would start after the Leading Innovation screen.

If any body can help it would be great, cheers.

OS: Windows 8 64bit
GParted version: 0.14.0-1
PC: Toshiba Satellite P850, i7

Have you tried the latest testing release (currently 0.14.1-beta1) in the testing branch?

Have the same exact issue as the OP.  Gparted + Windows 8 is a no go.  I have created bootable discs from both the stable 0.14.1-1 release and the test 0.14.0-1 release and NEITHER will boot in Windows 8.  Very frustrating and considering there is almost no info regarding Windows 8 and its compatibility with Gparted I'm stuck for now.

The same discs work fine in both of my Windows 7 machines.  In Windows 8, the proper boot drive sequence has been selected, boot security disabled, the drive spins up like it is trying to boot from it but never does.

When are we expecting to have a Windows 8 compatible version of Gparted??  Thanks in advance!

Is your computer using BIOS, or uEFI to boot?

I'm having the very same issue! And its with a recently purchased Toshiba Satellite L840D.

I'm cross posting my post from here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/ … 80639.html

Here is my post:

"I detailed my computer specs and problem in this thread: Partitioning Problems

I've found the root of the problem: I can't boot from any other CD, DVD or USB except the Windows 8 System Restore CD that I made when I got my laptop.

The story: I want to convert my primary Windows 8 partition to a logical partition, partition it and install Linux on my laptop. I can't do the conversion to logical from within Windows.

So I reset my boot device priority to CD/DVD in BIOS and attempted to boot into GParted and later, Minitool Partition Master to modify the partition from there, but I get a BIOS blue message in the middle of my screen that tells me that the CD/DVD boot option is not available.

But the laptop recognizes and booted from my laptop's recovery CD so I know the optical drive works and that the BIOS does allow some CD/DVDs to boot. I've tested the CDs I'm trying to boot from in other computers, and I know they work.

So why won't my laptop allow me to boot into these tools? Does it have something to do with Windows 8's secureboot initiative? How can I circumvent them?"

Re: Windows 8 + GParted 0.14.0-1 won't boot

I don't understand the problem. I disabled Secure Boot in my BIOS and then tried to re-boot with Minitool Partition Wizard but the laptop ignores the CD (it spins and spins and then loads Windows 8) or pops up a small blue BIOS message box that says to the effect that the CD/DVD boot option is not available and to go back to BIOS and pick another option.

(Question: Isn't UEFI that snazzy new interface? I have the good old 80s blue GUI BIOS in my brand new laptop, but to my knowledge, Microsoft requires that all Windows 8 installs run on UEFI. So which, do I have, BIOS or UEFI?)

Can you try the latest GParted Live 0.14.1-6 image?  Currently this is in the testing directory.
