Topic: Repartition NTFS HD that has extended partition

Win XP system.  I have a NTFS HD 160GB that has two partitions, C (Primary) & E (Extended). D drive is DVD. I'd like to resize the extended partition to a smaller size and then increase the primary partition. Both partitions have data. Tried to resize the extended partition, but got an error. Can I even resize existing extended partition when it still has data on it?  Suggestions please. THanks

Yes, the extended partition (and logical partitions within the extended partition) can be resized as long as these partition are not active or otherwise in use.  The logical partitions contain the data, whereas the extended partition is a container partition that holds all of the logical partitions.

Before editing partitions, we highly recommend that you have a good backup of your data in case anything goes wrong.

To provide more assistance, it would help if you save the gparted_details.htm log file and post the output here so that we can see the problem that you are experiencing.
