Topic: cannot get usb gparted to boot or anything at all :( please help

I'm new to this but have had very good success previously but am now having issues that I can't understand why its not working

I used gparted on a usb flash drive like i have many times before in creating a bootable usb.

I have formatted it as both fat 16 and as fat 32 in my many attempts to get this to work.

once the usb has been formated I have removed it from my computer and put it back in to remount it.

I than open tuxboot to create the bootable usb from gparted live stable iso which was downloaded by tuxboot.

everything says it was created successfully but everytime i have rebooted my computer to run gparted live from the usb nothing happens at all.
,
My computer boots like normal going right to my log in.

I have never had any major issues with creating a bootable usb before as i have done so many times for windows 7, windows xp, ubuntu and a couple others.

can someone please help give me an idea of what I'm missing or what I've done wrong???

Please and thank you for your help.

also I rarely ever post in forums so if this question is in the wrong section or something of that sort please tell me so i can repost in the correct section or correct whatever i have done wrong in my posting of this question for help.

again thank you for your help

Re: cannot get usb gparted to boot or anything at all :( please help

also to add further information if it helps

I use an hp pavilion dv6000 laptop running ubuntu 11.10

my usb flash drive is a targus card reader with a 2gb micro sd card, which has worked many times before in all of my bootable usb creations before.
just something with trying to create a gparted live usb does not want to work.....

also my main goal here is to run gparted live from the usb so i can partition my harddrive on my current computer (stated above) so i can install a copy of windows 7 ultimate side by side with my current ubuntu 11.10 os. dual boot!

Re: cannot get usb gparted to boot or anything at all :( please help

Did you set the boot priority to USB in the BIOS setup?
(I think many HP computers use a special keystroke on POST, to change the boot priority, perhaps ESC for the boot menu and CONTROL-S for the setup menu).

Did you try to boot another computer with this flash drive?
Did you try to use another usb port on the computer or disconnect unused usb devices?

Did you try the latest stable version or any previous that worked?

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***

In addition to the suggestions by Class413, you might want to try the latest testing release.

I appreciate the help thank you, I'm just at a loss as to what I'm doing wrong with as many attempts at this as i have tried lol.

Yes I have made sure the boot priority is set to usb, in fact its currently set that way and I havn't changed it since I started this project lol.
for my hp you hit F10 to get to bios to set its boot priority.
I only have this computer to work with, so don't have any others to test on or work on.
I've tried the usb flash drive in all available usb ports on the computer, still doesn't work unfortunetly
I've tried the current stable version and the latest testing version as well.
I've formatted the usb flash to both fat 16 and fat 32 as well as even tried a few other formats as well.

I've also tried using couple different usb flash drives that i have on hand as well minus the ones currently have bootable os's on them and are working on this computer.

what older versions might you suggest to try other than the current stable and testing versions?

Re: cannot get usb gparted to boot or anything at all :( please help

So far based on your description it sounds like the BIOS (or EFI firmware if your computer is recent) is not recognizing that it should boot from the USB drive first.

Have you tried any other live images to see if these will boot (e.g., Ubuntu, or Fedora)?
If other images work, then the problem is likely something specific to the GParted Live image.
If other images do not work, then the problem is likely related to the firmware settings on the computer.
