Topic: Basic download, burn, checksum question

Hi All,

I downloaded gparted-live-0.12.0-5.iso

I unzipped the download and removed it, so now I have five folders and 2 files to burn to a cd,

I see that on 11-29-2011, moderator advised someone, "Before burning, check the md5 checksum please, to verify that the downloaded file is good."

How do I do this checksum thing?

And last, all I want to do is reformat the Ubuntu partition side of my dual-boot with XP before I do a clean install of Ubuntu. I have no experience working with partitions and would like to find something close to step-by-step directions.

Thank you for your time and consideration

Re: Basic download, burn, checksum question

You don't have to unzip the iso file.
This iso file is the image of an entire bootable cd. You have to burn this file to an empty cdr disc, as "image" or "iso image", not just as data cd.
Most burning programs support this, among them nero (commercial), and infrarecorder (free).

The md5 check is done with various tools. Under mswindows, you can use the free tool in that page.
It doesn't need any install, you have just to put it in a folder (or even in the o.s. desktop) and execute it. Select "Generate checksums" and drag & drop the downloaded file in the window. The generated checksum (a long series of numbers and digits) will appear some seconds later (or perhaps some 10s of seconds, depending of the computer speed). Then, compare this to the "good" value, from the GParted download page (look for Checksums).
The value for the actual latest iso is

MD5SUMS
