Topic: Boot problem on macbook pro

Hi, i have a macbook pro with OSx 10.7 installed on it. I have downloaded gparted-live-0.11.0-10.iso and made a GParted Live on your USB flash drive using Tuxboot, but when i boot my macbook pro in any modes of GParted Live i see the following error :
" [  17.480541] fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs EFI VGA - removing generic driver "
I have read the GParted Live manual Tips on Booting GParted Live and did "radeon.modeset=0" but i saw the error again and i did "radeon.modeset=1" but the error appeared again, please tell me what can i do for this error?
Thanks.

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

Did you confirm the MD5SUM check sum before writing the image to the Flash drive?

If the image is okay, can you try it in another computer to see if it works?

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

I cheched MD5SUM check sum and it's true. Before i have downloaded  gparted-Live-0.11.0-10 i downloaded gparted 0.11.0-7 and installed it on my USB Flash and i tried it on a Toshiba laptop and it's worked but when i tried it on my macbook pro the same error as gparted-Live-0.11.0-10 appeared. My macbook pro has two graphic card, a radeon and the other is an intel.

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

Could you please give GParted live 0.11.0-12 in the testing release a try?
It comes with Linux kernel 3.2.4 and might support your hardware better.
Please let us know the results.

Steven.

I have the same problem with the MacBook Pro early 2011.

GParted live 0.11.0-12 do not solve this problem sad

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

Unfortunately I do not have a MacBook Pro for testing.

Can someone with a MacBook Pro try booting Debian Live (Sid version)?

GParted Live is based on Debian Live (the Sid version) so that would help to determine if the boot problem is specific to GParted Live.

I'm having this exact problem and I've tried everything I can think of to get it to boot. Is there anyone who know how to fix this?

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

Did you try the latest GParted Live (currently 0.14.1-6)?

Yes. This is the first time I've done anything like this so I think I've done everything correctly. There seems to be a lack of step by step directions for newbs around.

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

Do you have any other x86 or x86-64 based computers that you can try booting your GParted Live media (CD/USB)?

Can you boot other Live media on the MacBook Pro, such as Ubuntu or Fedora?

This will help to determine if the problem is with the MacBook Pro only.

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

What's your model for your Mac?
If it's quite new, you might have to wait for the updated linux kernel, e.g. 3.7.0 in GParted live so the hardware could be supported.

Re: Boot problem on macbook pro

I just thought I'd add that it doesn't work on my latest fancy Macbook Pro - A Model A1286.  I get an error that it can't find any devices when it tries to load X.  I went through all the troubleshooting steps and no luck.

I ended up booting the same CD in an imac and it loads up fine and using a firewire cable and target-disk-mode I can see the hard drive of the laptop, but after killing my mac once today, I'm going to be taking a backup before I see if I can resize the partitions.

(That was using the 0.14.1-6 version incidentally.  That also had problems recognising the keyboard to, so I had to use and external keyboard.  I suspect the hardware is just too new for it)

"I suspect the hardware is just too new for it" -> I believe yes. A newer kernel might be better in the future.
