Topic: Cannot resize my windows partition

Does the large red exclmation mark next to my existing Windows partition mean it is beyond repair? Trying to shrink this partition to install a clean install of Windows while I try and fix original. (wrong forum for those problems!). Currently running Ubuntu 11.10 from USB stick. This will not install on HDD either, I assume because of the same problems aith resizing the partition. Anything I can do or shall I just do a comlete new install and stop wasting time fiddling about?

Did you get any error message?
If you are not allowed to use resize options on this partition (grayed options), then this partition is probably mounted by the operating system. GParted doesn't proceed to modifying operations on any mounted ntfs partition. You have to unmount it first.

Furthermore, you can try the latest GParted Livecd, that doesn't mount partitions by default. It contains the latest stable GParted version (currently 0.10.0-3).

Also try selecting the partition and choosing the menu option "Partition --> Information" to learn more about the partition and possible reasons why an exclamation mark is shown.

Sinse original posting the exclamation mark has disappeared and I can now select the partition and specify a new size,(having not done anything other than restqrting latop) however it still does not resize. I now have an error report which I can send if interestd.
(The partition was unmounted BTW)

If the problem was that Windows was not shut down properly, then rebooting the laptop into Windows would run a chkdsk on the file system and fix that problem.

What is the error report?

You mean that on Windows loading?

The error report would be useful if you need further help.
