Topic: Solved - Attempting to increase C partition on Poweredge 1900 SBS 2003

Hello all,

I searched for this answer but failed so figured I would ask...

Here is what I have done so far.

Booted server with GPArted Live and shrunk the D partition by 100 GB and rebooted to Windows successfully.

Now in gparted, I have my C partion (25GB).  Next to it is 100 GB of unallocated space.  next to that is my D partion.

However, I am unable to increase the size of C.  I can however increase D back toward C...

I am onsite now but will post screen shots a bit later....I am thinking that the unallocated space is part of an extended partion?  If so, how can I make that unallocared space avaialbe to C?

Thanks a lot for any help you can give me and please ask for additional information if needed.

Todd V.

If I understand well the situation, there must be an extended partition that contains your logical "D" partition, as well as the freed disk space. This setup seems to be quite usual in mswindows servers.
You can check it from the GParted screen.

If so, you have to shrink the extended partition too, using the GParted Live CD. The unallocated space will be just next to the primary system partition. Then, you will be able to modify it.

Thanks, I will give it a try in the next 10 minutes or so and post back.

And oddly enough I was in the middle of reading this post http://gparted-forum.surf4.info/viewtop … 270#p27270  when I got your reply via email...  smile

Re: Solved - Attempting to increase C partition on Poweredge 1900 SBS 2003

Thanks a lot Class413.  I hadnt noticed the extended partition as I just kept clicking around through the graph at the top showing the partitions....Once I highlighted the extend partition it all made sense.  One thing of note is that if I attempted to resize the extended partition as far as it would go to the edge of the unallocated space I would receive an error message that it had failed...the details tab showed nothing of note either.  I  then resized the extended partition only 75 GB leaving 25 GB of unallocated space and it worked fine.

I am booting into Windows before I attempt to extend the C partition however this issue is solved.

Thanks you so much for your help!!!

Glad to see that you solved the problem.

In some cases, resizing in two steps does the work (this is often true in shrinking partitions. It has to do with 'ntfsresize').
Perhaps it would work by leaving something little unallocated like a few MiB.
