Topic: Missing dump program

Is there any specific reason why dump for ext2/3 is not installed (while xfsdump is)?
Just asking, it's easy enough to install it if you have Internet access and know how
to setup APT Debian sources...

Re: Missing dump program

For XFS file systems, the copy operation is performed using xfsdump and xfsrestore.  That is why xfsdump is needed.

The copy operation for ext2/3/4 is performed internally by GParted.  The e2fsprogs package contains the command line utilities for ext2/3/4 file systems.  Perhaps the dump command you speak of is not included in this package.

Re: Missing dump program

e2fsprogs (e.g. dumpe2fs) are for the filesystem meta-data, not for backup/restore of the files.
If I want to backup data before I change the partitions, I need dump.

Re: Missing dump program

Our goal is to try to keep the GParted Live image as small as reasonably possible while still enabling all of the features of the GParted application.

You can, of course, build your own image if that would suit your needs better.  Instructions can be found at Create GParted Live from Scratch.

Re: Missing dump program

Keeping GParted Live small is a reasonable goal.
But saying all the time "before you do this, make a backup" without providing the proper tool for the backup is a bit annoying.

Anyway, thanks for the link.

Re: Missing dump program

We are looking at adding a full backup for all file systems, but many other bugs and features are a higher priority at the moment.

Re: Missing dump program

Did you mean the "dump" program: 4.4bsd dump and restore for ext2 filesystems
Did you try partimage in the GParted live?

Steven.

Yes.

No.  I don't want an image, but a filesystem backup (so that I can restore it to
a completely different partition size, restore single files or directories, etc.
with all the filesystem specifics).

But just adding the 'dump' package from Debian would probably be pretty simple.

The full backup would be something available from within GParted.
Bug 364324 - Filesystem images support

Current thoughts are to use a tool such as FSArchiver.
