Topic: Resize Bootcamp (W7) partition, on a macbook

Hey

I created a gparted livecd on a USB stick from windows using tuxboot. After reboot and booting from the usb stick, the boot process stops at the grub prompt. I have browsed the docs and forums for what to do here, but I cant see anything that applies to the grub prompt when booting from usb.

Any directions would be highly appreciated.

Which version of GParted Live are you using?

What is the exact message when the boot process stops?

Have you tried the USB stick on another computer?

From the version file on the usb stick:

gparted-live-0.9.0-7
This GParted Live was created by:
create-gparted-live -c main non-free -k firmware-linux-free firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree firmware-bnx2 firmware-bnx2x firmware-qlogic firmware-ralink live-boot=2.0.15-1.drbl3 live-boot-initramfs-tools=2.0.15-1.drbl3 live-config=2.0.15-1.drbl1 live-config-sysvinit=2.0.15-1.drbl1 partimage=0.6.8-2 ntfs-3g=1:2011.1.15AR.4-2 libntfs-3g804=1:2011.1.15AR.4-2 ntfsprogs -l en -b u -e e -d sid -m http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian -s http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian-security -g http://free.nchc.org.tw/drbl-core -n 2.6.39-2 -i 0.9.0-7

The grub prompt is preceded by some text that disappears too quickly for me to catch. At the prompt itself there is some message about the use of tab and things of that nature.

For now I havent tried it in any other computer.

I tested the live usb on my desktop computer, it booted into gparted live like a charm.

Is there anything unusual or different about the computer in which GParted Live fails to boot?

Is there perhaps a device that GParted Live fails to recognize?

Re: Resize Bootcamp (W7) partition, on a macbook

The machine is a standard MacBook Pro 17" (Summer 2011). It does have a thunderbolt interface, unlike earlier revisions. There is also a SSD instead of the standard 700GB 5400rpm HDD.

Dont know if any of these could be the culprit?

Could you provide a screen shot, or a copy of the exact text on your computer when GParted Live fails to boot?

Re: Resize Bootcamp (W7) partition, on a macbook

Lets take it from the beginning. I power up, holding the alt key.

I get the Boot selection screen with MacOS, Botcamp and "EFI USB Boot" or something along those lines.

Immediately after selecting to boot from USB device, a message flashes too quickly for me to snap it with a photot, i actually had to record a video and watch again and again to interpret it:

Welcome to GRUB

error "prefix" is not set

Then it stops with this screen:

"created a gparted livecd on a USB stick from windows using tuxboot." -> Tuxboot only deals with MBR partition. To boot a Mac machine, you need to have a USB flash drive with EFI GPT table.
You can create that with gdisk (http://www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/), format that partition as VFAT, then unzip GParted live zip file on that USB flash drive.
With this, and if you are lucky, the USB key should be bootable on your Mac.
