Topic: gparted-live-0.8.1-3 Partition manager screen scrambled.

I just tried gparted-live-0.8.1-3 booted it up, tried vesa, tried ati both give same as no screens found, if no screen found how am I reading no screen found? Tried regular, the partition manager where the manager brings up the HDD's SSD's etc & partitions is scrambled with all kinds of colored lines and blocks. No problem on the Desktop or Desktop Icons just the partition manager.

Using a ATI 5800 series card. What could be the problem?

I've got 0.6.4-1 on a disk and works fine, no scramble as I have to use safemode and force vesa.

Funny thing is, a long time ago, I used a 6600 nvidia series card and gave the same problem, I had to force vesa in order for it to work. I've got a completely different system now, and this still occurs. Seems to me if this happens on nvidia and ati, two different systems, why does this not happen to the developers? I'm just confused as to why this happens.

Thanks.

Have you tried the booting options mentioned in the GParted FAQ?

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried 1) & 2). Failsafe mode is what I meant rather safemode.

Haven't tried the 3) > 4), I'll wait for next release or the following or so on so forth as 0.6.4-1 does fine.

Thanks.

Re: gparted-live-0.8.1-3 Partition manager screen scrambled.

I gave it another shot at 0.8.1-3.

Ok, does gparted not work with certain monitors?

I've got two monitors hooked up to my ATI 5830.

On MS Windows 7, Monitor one is Samsung SyncMaster 710N, Monitor two is Dell E172FP. Both 17" monitors.

This scramble problem that use to occur with my old nvidia 6600 was used with this Syncmaster 710N.

Now, I went through all options that Trouble booting GParted Live? suggests.

The one and only that works is Tab at main menu and enter space radeon.modeset=0

It works on my Dell screen but on my syncmaster the entire screen goes all scrambly with colored lines n blocks.

On the dell I get absolutely no scramble problems but at the same time as I mentioned the syncmaster710N is all scrambly.

Could this be a monitor proplem? I tried radeon.modeset=1 and I receive the same problem in the first post, all works except the partition manager is all scrambled.

So, could this be due to gparted not liking the Samsung SyncMaster710N? or gparted does not like dual screens?

Any suggestions?

The GParted Live image is based on Debian Live.  You might try the latest Debian Live image to check if it boots properly on your computers.

K, I ran debian-live-6.0.1-amd64-gnome-desktop off a dvd, booted up normally, everything went smooth, both screens worked wonderfully, I used the terminal sudo aptitude install gparted, debian downloaded gparted n installed it, ran gparted, everything went smooth on the debian-live.

I can tell you this though, I sure do like this latest version of debian vs new ubuntu. But anyhow, no problems with debian-live.

So, anything else? I could take a photo of the problem if you need to see. Would you like a photo of the problem?

Interesting.  I wonder if Debian Live recently made some updates to improve video card support.

I have uploaded GParted live 0.8.1-5, and it comes with kernel 2.6.39-2 and updated programs. Maybe you can give that a try.
Please let us know the results.
Thanks.

Hi Steven.

I tired both 0.8.1-3 and 0.8.1-5 , out of every option I come to find out radeon.setmode=0 then when asked ForceVideo [Vesa] works perfect.

Prior with using start normally + radeon.setmode=0 , when asked at the  3 options are given 1, (2 forcevideo) and 3, I was using the 1st option, this caused gparted & desktop to work on the Dell (2nd monitor) but not the syncmaster (1st monitor, entirely scrambled up).

Something popped in my head to try radeon.setmode=0 then when asked ForceVideo [Vesa] , booted up and I was like wohoo.

Since I've come to find out about radeon.setmode=0 , I will not forget the cmd line and will use it with forevideo (vesa). I wonder why it must be done this way as I stated above, there is no problem running 0.6.4-1 @ normal start + force video(vesa)

I will use 0.8.1-5 since I am guessing I took up your time for a newer updated version of gparted.

I apologize that I did not try this in the first place, taking up your guys time.

Thank you.

Yes, KMS might cause this issue. Therefore "radeon.setmode=0" can solve this.
Thanks for sharing this results.
