Topic: Gparted Newbie: Unable to boot Win7 on resized & copied partition

I purchased a 120GB OCZ Vertex 3 to replace my 128 Crucial c300.  Normally, I would just use Clonezilla to clone the entire disk from one drive to another.  However, because the Vertex3 was 8GB smaller than the c300, I could not do that.

Instead, I used GParted (very new to this) to resize the 128GB partition on the c300 to 119GB.  I then tried to copy the resized partition to the vertex3 using multiple attempts.  I tried leaving a 1MB gap before the new primary partition and without doing that.  I also tried cloning the 119GB partition and then restoring the clone to the vertex3.  In each instance, I was unable to boot from the vertex3 using the copied partition.

Am I doing something wrong with the copy?  I was able to boot the c300 using the resized partition so it seems like my mistake is in the copying.

When a partition is copied, it is identical and has the same volume label and UUID.  If you are using both the source and the destination partition on the same PC, then you will need to change the UUID and volume label.

If you only have one of the drives in the system at one time, then most likely all you need to do is restore the boot configuration.  See the GParted FAQ for details on how to do this.

Thanks-- your solution worked.  I tossed in the win7 dvd and let it rebuild the partition table.  Back online.

Is there an open source app that will let me manually rebuild a partition table?

I'm not really sure what you mean by this question.

Testdisk will search a drive to try to recover a lost partition table.
Fdisk can be used from the command line to manually build a partition table.
Parted and GParted can also be used to build partition tables.
