Topic: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

After initial boot sequence, I receive this error with the Gparted Live CD.

The behavior is a bit different with the two different versions of the LiveCD, but the last few messages are the same:

...
mount: Mounting /dev/hdc on /mnt failed: Invalid argument
No GParted LiveCD found!!!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Here's what I've tried:

gparted-livecd-0.2.5-5.iso
Graphical menu appears prompting me to skip (for most machines) so I do and the above message shows

gparted-livecd-0.2.2-6.iso
Boot sequence shows and slightly before the above messages, I receive:

Freeing uused kernel memory: 276k freed    <here is where CD drive starts to spin up again>
mount: /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
ide-cd: cmd 0x28 timed out
hdc: DMA interrupt recovery
hdc: lost interrupt
hdc: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
hdc: DMA disabled
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: ATAPI reset complete
Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

I did try the [SOLVED] "noacpi" boot load command suggested in this thread, but that has no effect.

Thanks in advance,

Roger

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I can't do anything with hardware info. How could I?

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

are you saying this is a hardware issue?

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

The problem might come from this :
Unable to identify CD-ROM format.

Tell us about your  hardware please ...

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

could this be how I formatted/wrote the CD? My "RecordNow" software has three parameters:

Type: Track at Once (OPEN), Track at Once (CLOSED), Disk at Once (CLOSED)
Mode: 1, 2 XA
File System: ISO+Joliet, ISO+Joliet+UDF, ISO Level 2

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

this could be yes.
the cd must be closed. BTW did you bunr your cd with the same drive which you boot the livecd now ?

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I just tried "Disk at once (CLOSED)" format - no difference.
To answer your question, you can see my system only has DVD/CD-ROM, so I am using another system to burn the CD which I load on that laptop.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Try it with roxio or nero. I think somebody had the same problem 3 or 4 months ago, so I don't remember exactly. I think he used roxio and it worked. I used the default settings in roxio and just "create cd from disk image" once. I don't use windows much. Your hardware should be fine and I know samsung dvd players work.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Hi roger this is veeru2neo  i too encountered same error while installation .I browsed on the forums
lot about this problem i cam to the conclusuion that the ATI chipset is not supporting the kernel as many of us encountering same problem has ATI Chipset.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

mount: /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only

I am getting the above problem also. How can I disable write-protection on hdc? I couldn't make heads or tails of the solution to this problem in this thread if it was fixed or not.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

What are you trying to do? You can't write to a cdrom. I'm going to find a way to hide that.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I am not trying to write to the cdrom. I am trying to resize my windows partition to make room for linux. This is the only error message I can find that relates thus far.

The only thing I can successfully resize is the unallocated partition windows uses for system recovery. It's 8mb. I can only make that smaller and add to the windows partition. I can not shrink the windows partition.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

/dev/hdc is your cdrom drive. Your problem belongs in gparted not live media. Start a new topic there.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I'm using the Gparted Live CD.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

so

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

so ...apparently I don't know what I'm doing. I apologize.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

the livecd != gparted
the livecd offers a safe and complete for gparted to run, but gparted is a standalone program. Whenever you have a problem with gparted on the livecd, it's most likely a problem with gparted and not with the livecd.

Re: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I don't care what software you use, so long as you are burning an iso to the cd it makes no difference.

You don't need to finalise the CD either. Go visit Puppy Linux multisession Live CD site. You will learn a lot.
