Topic: LiveCD loads X, but doesn't start GParted itself

Hi there,

I'm not sure whether or not to hope this is an FAQ - if it is, then I apologise for asking this question, but at least in that case the problem ought to be easy to fix! My Googling is not not finding any hits for this, however.

I am using the GParted Live 0.4-6-1 CD to boot a Dell PowerEdge 2800. As it boots it shows some errors (kernel messages?) complaining about hda being an invalid size or something, but I don't think this is anything to worry about, as it does also seem to find the multiple logical drives (sda, sdb) of the RAID array that I'm interested in. I selected keyboard layout & British English, then it gives me the options regarding the X server. I think I chose the default [0] - telling it to do everything automagically - and then X loaded, however it does not seem to get past that. I see the grey background and a big cursor in the shape of an X, but nothing else.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

I don't think it will help to go back and manually select graphics mode, because the X server is loading.

I hoped to be able to open a different virtual terminal and see if there was any logging output, or log files that I could examine, or anything, but pressing alt-f2 does nothing. The cursor moves around on the screen, so the computer hasn't locked up completely.

I should probably mention that I'm accessing the machine remotely, and the live CD is mounted using the remote media feature of a DRAC (Dell Remote Access Controller). I don't believe this is the cause, unless gparted fails silently if the media is slow to load.

Alternatively, any other suggestions for enlarging the C: partition of a Windows 2003 server would be much appreciated. SystemRescueCD version 1.3.1 is working just fine with the DRAC's remote media function, but the command-line version of parted supplied on there bails out complaining that it doesn't resize NTFS.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Stroller.

Re: LiveCD loads X, but doesn't start GParted itself

The SystemRescueCD version 1.3.1 contains GParted as well as parted.  To use GParted with the SysRescCd, you need to start "X" either with "wizard" or "startx".

Regarding problems with booting the LiveCD, we are currently experiencing resizing difficulty with recent versions.  See the following post:
WARNING! Problem Resizing File Systems with GParted
As a result I do not recommend that you try the recent Live CD versions until after we have this problem resolved.

Hi gedakc,

I see you've commented on two of my posts. Many thanks for your help. I'm just about to update this thread with the conclusion.
