Topic: I tried to move and resize partitions using GParted 0.4.5

Hi, I tried to move and resize partitions. And now have a problem with sda6 (it is my /home) after using GParted 0.4.5 on the Ubuntu 9.10 live cd.  I booted from the live cd. This is copy of the terminal.

Re: I tried to move and resize partitions using GParted 0.4.5

Thank you for creating a new post (thread) to track this problem.

I have taken the liberty of deleting the previous post.

What is the problem or error message you see with your home (sda6) file system?

Re: I tried to move and resize partitions using GParted 0.4.5

The sda6 /home is not found when ubuntu starts. Gparted reports sda6 as unknown file system, and the gap before sda7 as unallocated. The sda6 partition should be type ext3.

The sda6 partition should be type ext3.

Did you save a copy of the gparted_details.htm log file?  This would greatly help to determine what occurred.

If not, please describe as best as you can exactly what steps you took and any error messages that were displayed to you.

Re: I tried to move and resize partitions using GParted 0.4.5

I did not save the log file. I Booted to ubuntu 9.10 live cd, opened gparted, I wanted to shrink sda2 and add the unallocated space to sda6. I had to turn off swap sda5 to move, and set to shrink sda2, then, if I remember correctly, moving sda5 and sda6 to the left, unallocated space to the right, to then, expand sda6 using the unallocated  space. It seems like gparted completed the shrink of sda2, and the move of unallocated space, but not the expand of sda6. I set computer to work, then came back in a few hours to find computer frozen. I waited a long time for any sign of disk activity. Then did a REISUB to boot to login but no home is found. It will boot to root in recovery mode.

Since your computer was frozen you would not have been able to save the log file. ;(

I think it would be useful to try using TestDisk to see if it can find where sda6 actually starts.  You can post the output from testdisk here if you would like a second opinion on whether to write updated partition table entries.

I don't know if this is good or bad.

The long version. http://avisaorganics.com/tmp/testdisk.log

Please note that it is best to make a byte for byte copy of your drive before attempting recovery actions.  That way you have a pristine image to go back to in case any of the recovery attempts make the problem worse.

Also I should point out that I am not a data recovery expert.  There are many other individuals with more knowledge in this area than I.  If your data is important then you are advised to seek out a professional data recovery expert.

From the following portion of the log file it appears that testdisk can see an ext3 partition after the Linux Swap partition.  It is shown twice.  Once with a size of 33913152 sectors and again with a size of 33929154 sectors.

Unfortunately I don't see anything following in the log file that indicates that these are recoverable.

If testdisk cannot recover the partition, you could try to recover the individual files using a tool such as PhotoRec.  Of course your best option would be to restore from backup if you have one.

Yep... I thought that partition was lost. I was able to recover all my important files from the disk. Fresh installed ubuntu 9.1 to face no xdmcp yikes  Thanks for your help.
