Topic: Bad Sector disagreement

Two different versions of gparted cds that I have both insist that my drive has at least two bad sectors. I've run the required chkdsk command twice (with many reboots). It hasn't found anything wrong. I also ran a Partition Property check and a Bad Sector Test with EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition, neither found an issue.

So what am I to do? I really want to resize this ntfs partition so I can get my linux on.

Re: Bad Sector disagreement

I hope you use the latest GParted version. There were some reports on erroneous bad sector reports by some old versions. Furthermore, this check comes from ntfsresize, that performs operations on the ntfs filesystem.

You can check the cable connections to be sure that there is no problems there.

There are check utilities provided by the hard disk manufacturers, that can perform deep scans. You can find them usually in the web site of the manufacturer of your disk.

If you are sure that the disk is good, you can even run ntfsresize directly from the command line with an option to ignore bad sector warnings.

If you run vista, you can try to use the vista partition resize tool. It usually works, however sometimes it can't make the partition very small.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***
