Re: Gparted-0.3.4-4-beta

Gparted Live CD is a good and useful software.

The last version seems a clone of SystemRescueCd http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots

The "old" version from Patrick Verner looks better. http://www.partedmagic.com

What about this "fork"?

10

Re: Gparted-0.3.4-4-beta

Hi PauLoX,
The last version is based on gentoo catalyst, like sysreccd is, you are right. I also used windowmaker.
But this livecd is absolutly open and its building files will be on svn asap, so that people have access to it if they want/need. BTW it can be updated very easly. That is not the case with the old livecd, since nobody knows exactly how it is built and how it works, except Patrick. This is not our goal, so we prefer go from something precise and open.

thx for your reporting.

Re: Gparted-0.3.4-4-beta

I used the beta 0.5 to resize a Vista partition last night.

I have an XP partition followed by a Vista partition.

Shrank the XP partition, then expanded the Vista partition to the left to fill empty space.

After reboot, Vista would not boot. It wanted the original install DVD (didn't happen to have it handy..but knew I could get it this morning at the office)

XP booted fine...it did an automatic CHKDSK of the Vista partition.

Evidently, the resize changes something in the new Vista way of handling the boot loader.
The Microsoft utility to edit contents of this is BCDEdit...but it's a bit tricky to use, so I found a GUI utility called EasyBCD....The BCD info on where the Vista partition was located was missing...so I reset it to change the following:
device=Partition E:
osdevice= partion E:

and everything boots normally now.

Of course, the appropriate drive letter for your partition may be different depending on other partitions and devices.

Re: Gparted-0.3.4-4-beta

I can't get either version 0.4 or 0.5 to come all the way up on either of my computers. On my laptop, an old emachines 450 MHz K6-2, with 256 MB ram, it only boots as far as "Freeing unused kernel memory. XXX KB freed", then it stops. I can hit Enter on the keyboard & get a carriage return on the screen, also the three finger salute will reboot it, it just won't go beyond that point.
On my desktop, a 2000 MHz Athlon, with 512 MB ram & a Realtek video card, it appears to start X, but not send a signal to the monitor. It's a Sony CPD-G500 monitor; the values in xorg.conf are conservative for it. I can get to the console with CTRL-ALT-BKSP & the following is displayed:

The xinit statement is probably due to my CTRL-ALT-BKSP.
Once I am at the console, the command line works normally.
By the way, version 0.3.3 works flawlessly on both machines, as does Patricks gparted magic

Re: Gparted-0.3.4-4-beta

It seems that there is a problem with the X Window drivers for Intel-based motherboards w/intergrated video. When I tried booting the betas on my system with a Intel D845GVSR motherboard, I basically get a bunch of error messages that seem to say the drivers for X are basically missing in the beta versions. X will not start at all. Gparted-livecd-0.3.3-0 works flawlessly on this machine, which makes me think that the drivers are in fact missing.

It uses the i810 driver which according to the docs supports the Intel i810, i810-DC100, i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM,855GM, 865G, 915G, 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 965G, 965Q and 946GZ chipsets.

During the boot process, the system trys to copy all the contains of the livecd to cache, then it stops. This operation can take sometimes, depends on the  machine.

Like you can see , the video card might not be recognized. I am going to make some tests about that.

The "video card" is built into the motherboard, which is an Intel D845GVSR motherboard which uses the Xorg i810 driver. The closest thing to a model number would be to say that the "graphics card" would be an Intel 845.

I took a quick look at the xorg.log file, I may be wrong but it looks like the xorg VESA driver is trying to be loaded instead of the i810 driver. Might be the problem.
