It could be a problem with your sata i guess ; but i dont really think this is a livecd problem.
Nevertheless the graphical problem comes from the lake of graphical drivers : you 'd better chose Xserver vga when window popup during the boot process. And when the screen comes back after you enable Xserver, dont forget to click oon Done at the end.

It should fix your second problem...

Hi, Larry, thanks for the quick reply.

You are right, by using Xvesa, the CD boots ok and gparted worked just fine.  Only one thing that I have to mention is that my hard disk light still flashes constantly even after I quit Gparted.  In fact the light never went off after the "SATA link down" error.

Thanks for your help.

well, i wonder if there is a connection problem.
Did you ever got this kind of warning before ?
I doubt it could come from gparted....

No, I never saw this problem before.  Both OS (XP and Vista) works fine and the HD light just works as normal.   I agree it is probably not a gparted problem, but since I've done what I need, so it is not work investigating.

I will recommend Gparted to anyone that needs partition tools, and I guess I will throw away my ParttionMagic disks.
