Topic: Only goes so far and black screen

I have a dell inspiron 1721 with vista home premium. i have a 160gb hd with 2gb of ram.
i am using gparted livecd-0.3.4-8.

i boot from it and it gets to the mounting /dev/hda  i believe and after a few minutes the screen goes black.

am i using the wrong type of gparted? all i want to do is follow this tutorial http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp using gparted.

please help me as i dislike vista and want to install my OEM XP Pro.

Thanks a lot.

I don't understand very well this tutorial.
I think you can shrink vista partition now using the "diskpart" utility from vista.
Gparted doesn't mount any partitions by default. If you have any boot problem with gparted livecd, you can try the other options from the boot screen, or even a previous version, like 0.3.4-5 or 0.3.4-2.

it says that the diskpart is on the vista dvd and mine was preinstalled

In this case, usually you have to press a special key(s) on boot time, to enter into the "recovery" mode.
