Topic: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

Hi...
Only recently have using Gparted and detected this strange behaviour:
Sometimes Gparted simply reports "HDD unallocated".
Although other utils such Ranish and or Testdisk reports all ok with the mbr and partition information.
I have noticed that the problem is related with the existence of an extended partition...
Noticed that somewhere in the forum the same thing happened when an extended partition is present...
For instance in a specific hardware combination Gparted takes more than 4 minutes between any action with the HDD....
Both at start (enum the partitions) or any other (resize, move) action...
The hdd in question is connected as secondary slave.

Thanks in advance...

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

Can you please give us your hardware configuration? Disks, types, partitions, operating systems... And, the version you tried (installed version? live CD ? )

Concerning time, some members report that gparted took longer to begin the task but took shorter to do the task than other software.

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

I used Gparted tru SystemrescueCD 0.3.7 beta... Latest version
The specs are AMD atlhon XP 750Mhz
; 512 Ram;
board Asus A7V;
HDD Maxtor 40Gb.

Partitions:
fat32 primary 5Gb  (c:) ;
fat32 primary (d:) 15 Gb;
10Gb unallocated
10 Gb Extended (fat32 (e:) 10Gb)
With any linux the HDD is reported as being /dev/hdb  ...
As i reported before it takes an "eternity" to start ...
but each time it needs a refresh it  takes more than 5 minutes...
Although now it reports as the HDD is unallocated ...
someone within the forum had a similar problem ...
I suppose it regarded the extended partition...
Other utils do report no problems whatsoever with the hdd estrututure...
But now I am unable to resize / move any othe partitions...

Ideas?

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

My friend, the best place for gparted is gparted site.
http://gparted.sf.net/
That's because there are new versions not included in various rescue cds.
So, I'd like to ask you if you can download the latest liveCD (version 0.3.4-8) or 0.3.4-7.
Especially, if you have windows partitions, these versions are much better than older ones.

(PS What's the 'gparted' version in SystemrescueCD 0.3.7 beta ? )

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

The Gparted version in systemrescueCD is 0.3.4 ..
No further numbers...
My main problem is not regarding the windows partitions but the lack of them ...
I am away from home but I wil ltry to download the most recent Gparted version in order to check the before mentioned behaviour...

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

Perhaps there is something to do with the hardware scanning. Please, try it in a cd-rw disc
hdb... means that there is another hard disk in the computer. ?

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

As far as I know Linux / Unix the "hd" or "sd" prefixs are defined due to the specific order in the board...
Meaning that my hd( b) is the second controler present in the board...
As far as I know my CDrom is reported as hd (c) being the 3th device in the controler...
I suppose that an QT parted version does report the existence of the hd (c) as an HDD ...
The problem with Gparted (0.3.4) is that now ( i do not know  why... yet)  is not able to read the mbr or  any partition information....
Although all ( HDD) is working correctly....

PS I am about to try later on the most recent Gparted live CD....

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

Starting the updated Gparted CD 0.3.4-8 everything worked flawlessly, although Gparted took about 3 minutes "scanning" the devices...
This it sees the partitions correctly ...:)
So my problem were due to an old Gparted version...

I do have a small question:
How can I find the correct sub version of Gparted?
In the interface about button it gives only the 0.3.4 information version ... sad

Thanks for the great util...

Re: [Solved]Full HDD unallocated

The sure way is to take it from the gparted page:
