Topic: Fatal server error: no screens found

1.  I am using the latest version of GParted Live CD
2.  I have tried using the manual video card option but it has produced this same error:

"Fatal server error:
no screens found
Fatal IO error 104"

Any ideas?

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

At least tell what driver your trying to use. I'm not psychic dude. smile

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

Well I have a XFX 6600 GT and I have tried using both the vesa and Nvidia drivers with the CD with the same results as above.

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

Do you use any other linux distros?
If so, which one and what drivers work? I would like to see your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
Is this card really new?

Try other depths and screen sizes.

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

Yes I do (Ubuntu Linux).  My card (XFX 6600 GT) I've had for about a year now.  Here's the xorg.conf file:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig:  version 1.0  (buildmeister@builder26)  Mon May 15 14:17:32 PDT 2006

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
#   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

Driver         "nvidia"

So there is no way that card will work without the official nvidia driver? This isn't looking good...

7

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

It seems to work pretty good under vesa drivers actually.  I can't do any 3d games and such but atleast the windows don't streak like in windows.

8

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

So does the vesa driver on the livecd work then?

9

Re: Fatal server error: no screens found

Actually all I had to do was use the default of 24-bit and 1024 x 768 and it worked.  I guess that the previous option I had used (32-bit and 1280 x 1024) messed it up.  Anyways, it worked fine downsizing my NTFS partition, I just need to find out a way to assign the unallocated space to my Linux EXT3 partition now.

I'm glad it worked out for you. smile
