Topic: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

I have a volume which consists out of 2 partitions: 1 active (C:-boot) + E:
Sizes  C: 25000   +    E:  53160
I would like to decrease the size of the E partition and enlarge the C partition.

- Increasing E with 10G worked fine !
I could see the free unallocated space after the proces.
- But if I want to enlarge-resize my C-partition it's only possible to decrease this! I can't increase the C-volume?! Gparted doesn't accept a larger C-volume.

Maybe it's a stupid question, it's the first time that I use Gparted.
But any advice would be very welcome.

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

i guess E: was a logical partition, which is encapslued in a extended partition ; swhen you shrink the logical partition, you get free space INTO the extended partition, but not out of it !!! So know you nedd to shrink the extended partition too.
To do this, click the endpoint of the extended partition and chose rezise move, and then shrink the extended partition from the left handle...
Hope you 'll understand ...

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

Yes, indeed. That's my configuration.
So after your advice first I have reduced the size of my logical E:.
After that I have reduced the size of the extended partition. ( result: unallocated space on the fysical drive, 10 G)
But unfortunately It's still impossible to increase the size of my C:

?!

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

Where is unallocated space ? between c: and extended partition ?
Please past here the output of :
# fdisk -ul

thx

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

Or better if you could take a screenshot, and past it somewhere on website, and give us the url, should be great wink

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

Don't forget please, I am a newbie in this stuff.
I can make a screenshot, I can execute the fdisk command. I see the results. But I don't know how to save this file on a disk?! This application is working in memory, isn't it? Or am I missing something here? ( only 'root' but that's however no disk, I think)

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

I'm afraid that I'l have to classify this one under "no solution".
I've tried to follow the saving lines but I have no floppy, there seems to be nothing saved on my disk after launching the several commands ( I probably do something wrong) and my USB stick triggers a lot of errors during the booting phase.
But however I think this is a 'structural' problem which has nothing to do with Gparted as such. I've tried this also via "Partition Magic" and I have the same problem: unallocated space of 10 G from the E-logical partition should be available and is visible. But it seems to be impossible to "import" this 'free' space (increase) into the C-drive (boot partition). And I have reduced also the size of the extended partition.

Very strange...?

Anyhow, thanks for the assistance.

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

in that case you could provide us with the output of 'fdisk -lu' as requested by LarryT.

10

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

I can't see how that I can do that without saving the TXT-file on something? The output of that command contains quite some text. It's hard to write this output down on a piece of paper and reboot the system and retype it again.
Do you understand what I am trying to say?

Or is there another way?

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

the best way to save any output is to use the doc i have written :-p

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

Indeed, I know. But as I described before: this is not working on my system.
So I will give it a try by typing the requested info manually hoping I am not making any mistakes.
I hope also this gives a hint to someone?

- In this example I have 1 G unallocated space wich I can't extend to the C:
It's only possible to reduce C:

Output of FDISK -ul:

Disk /dev/hda: 81.9G  81964302336 bytes
255 heads, 63sec/track, 9964 cyl , tot 160086528 sec
units= sectors of 1 * 512 bytes= 512 bytes

Device       boot         start                    end               blocks                         id       system

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

okay, like i said before, you need to shrink your extended partition !
double clic on the empty grayed-space, and then take the LEFT handle and push it to the right !

do you understand ?
This is not very easy to explain :-p

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

I think I understand what you mean. But I don't know what is happening and this I don't understand:

- Indeed, I think I forgot to shrink my extended partition the previous time. But the only way to resize the extended partition is via the menu. (After that action I think the "+" sign in the fdisk -ul output drops 1 position down towards dev/hda5. Is that correct?)

- If I double click on the empty grayed space ( titled 'Unallocated space 9.77 GiB') nothing happens, only an information window appears "info about unallocated" !?
There is absolutely no handle visible if I try to take the left of that space...!

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

ok !
I have posted a screenshot to give you some explanation smile
Have a look there : http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/tips/extended.jpg
As you can see, i have some grayed-free space in front of /dev/sda5
/dev/sda5 is a logical partition included in the extended partition, which is here /dev/sda2

-I clic the /dev/sda2 partition in the Extended-partition-list window
- Then i right-clic on this selected partition, and i got resize/move choice.
- Clic it, and ... go one smile

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

I am afraid there are still some misunderstandings. Therefore I took on a very primitive way some screenshots. So you are able to see what I see.

Please, take a look at

http://users.skynet.be/am028462/resizeproblem001.jpg
http://users.skynet.be/am028462/resizeproblem003.jpg
http://users.skynet.be/am028462/resizeproblem004.jpg

As yo can see in the first picture despite the avaliable free unallocated space it's impossible to increase the size of C:  ( the up-button is greyed-out)

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

Of course ! Did you really hade a look to my screenshot ??? :-/
Didnt you see free space MUST be contiguous ??????

To solve your problem :
grow up your hda2 up to the end of your drive
move your hda5 from the beginning of the hda2 to the end of hda2
shrink your hda2
THEN you will get free space BETWEEN hda1 and hda2, and THEN i could grow up hda1 !

Is it okay ?

I have just made a new tip for the problem you seem to have : http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/tips/gfs.htm

It should give you some help...

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

This is really driving me crazy!
On your described MOVE-step I can't move. I can't see any handle ( cross-handle), clicking, double-click, ... doesn't help.
There is no action possible. So step "move your hda5 from the beginning of the hda2 to the end of hda2" is impossible to achieve. ( see http://users.skynet.be/am028462/no_handle_to_move.jpg = the same situation as on page 5 of your manual  http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/tips/gfs.htm
)

??

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

To have your hda5 moving you must clic INTO your partition, then you get a cross : did you try to clic (and keep your finger on the mouse-left-clic) ?
Thisd is just impossible that you havent got the cross when clicking permanently on the left clic !
Look at this picture : do you see the cross ? : http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/tips/gfs/gfs-5.jpg
I get this cross, because  I KEEP MY FINGER on thez mouse left clic.

Did you try this too ?

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

I've tried this many times. I can't see any cross.
100% sure !

23

Re: impossible to enlarge my bootpartition

well, i cant understand this !
The only think i could do, if you would like it, would be to connect to your system through the internet; using text or  graphical mode.
I can easly understand you dont want this, but it is up to you.

So what ?
