Topic: Disk giving I/O errors, using Gparted check failed almost immediately

I have a 2TB disk drive on a USB port that has begun to fail. It was ok for on occasional use for months but now sometimes comes up with I/O errors when writing new files. The data already on there seems readable. Format is NTFS.

Computer not having any other problems. Operating system Ubuntu 14.04.

Tried to check disk using gparted.

partition unmount - ok
partition check - failed almost immediately. The file it wrote is about 400k and a part is pasted here. Is there a way to attach an .htm file on the forum?

"Accounting clusters ...
Cluster accounting failed at 325043983 (0x135fc70f): extra cluster in $Bitmap
Cluster accounting failed at 325043984 (0x135fc710): extra cluster in $Bitmap
Cluster accounting failed at 325043985 (0x135fc711): extra cluster in $Bitmap"

Is there anything I can try to fix the problem I can try reformatting the disk but I would prefer to keep the data that is already on there if possible. Time is not a problem as I have a second computer so it doesn't matter if something run for days.

I suggest copying your data to another disk.  You might try attaching the disk to a computer running Windows and copying the files over.  Or you might try mounting the NTFS partition in GNU/Linux and copying the files.

After you have a backup of your data, you might check on the health of the disk using gsmartcontrol, which is included on GParted Live.
