Topic: Did I partition correctly?

Hello,
nuubie here! smile
The other day I installed AVLinux using the live DVD. When I clicked to install the system to my HDD, it took me through the procedure, which included using GParted.

As I'm not an expert with GParted, I thought I'd give it a try.
I wanted to completely remove my current operation system (a different Linux OS) and install AVLinux to replace it. So when it opened GParted, I had:

the main partition, which I unmounted. I chose ext4 as the format.

The other three partitions: swap, unallocated and boot, I left as they were.

I was then given the option to install GRUB at root or MBR. I chose MBR.

Did I do it correctly?

The reason I'm asking, is because although the install seemed to go just fine, I had two strange behaviors:
1) ufw firewall won't initialize for auto-start-up
2) the system doesn't shutdown without forcing.

Are these problems related to the Gparted procedure I performed?

Installing GRUB in the Master Boot Record at the beginning of the drive is a normal thing to do.  So your choice here was good.  If you had installed it at the beginning of the partition then you would have had to update whichever boot  manager was using the MBR so that it would recognize the new operating system you installed.

The problems you are experiencing with the firewall and shutdown would not be caused by your choice of GRUB install location, and are not related to the partition layout you created with GParted.

For these problems I suggest you follow up with a forum related to your new GNU/Linux distribution.

Hi gedakc,
thank you for your help.
Its good to hear that at least I got the MBR correct. Although I don't understand the part about putting it at the beginning of the partition. I just unmounted the main partition and formatted it as ext4.

My fear was that I had to unmount the other smaller partitions, but it sounds like I did the right thing by leaving them there for the new OS to use?

To change a partition it must be unmounted.  Hence you were correct to unmount a partition before changing it.

If you use the GParted Live image, then none of the partitions are mounted so you do not need to worry about this step.

At the moment everything seems to work fine on the HDD install; based on your posts, it sounds like I did things correctly.
