Topic: just downloaded gparted

Hello,
I imagine this question has already been asked but I could not find it on here. I just downloaded gparted live and now need to do the next step of burning it onto a cd. It downloaded as a winrar file (ie zipped i guess?) do i need to open the winrar file and burn whats inside to the cd or just burn the winrar file to the cd in general.

So basically do i dismantle the winrar file and burn the individual files or just put the winrar file on the cd?

Thank you all in advance for help.

Tonka

Re: just downloaded gparted

For the Live CD, you need to download the .iso file from the GParted download page.
It has nothing to do with winrar .rar compressed files. It is an iso image file for the bootable cd. The winrar software is just able to browse the content of these files.

1. The first step is the download of the iso file.

2. The second step would be to check if the downloaded iso file is good or broken. For this, you need to check the md5 sum, a long word with letters and numbers you can find in the download page
(look for the link "Checksums" for the stable or the testing version.
The link for the current stable version is here.
There are various freeware programs to do this. A few of them:
http://www.toast442.org/md5/
http://www.winmd5.com/
http://www.fastsum.com/press/windows-md … tility.php

3. The third step is to burn the cd, using some burning software that is able to burn "ISO IMAGE" files, not just data cds.
The free open-source infrarecorder does the job, as well as Nero and other commercial programs.
Other iso burning software:
ImgBurn, MagicISO etc
Be careful to select ISO burning or IMAGE burning or ISO IMAGE burning.

the link that i downloaded the gparted.iso thingy is found at the bottom of this page

http://www.ehow.com/how_4442619_use-gpa … ition.html

it downloaded as a winrar file for some reason? i am getting that burning software you suggested to burn as a iso file while i wait for your response as to wheather that link on that page to get the gparted iso is correct or not..it downloads off of sourceforge i think.

Re: just downloaded gparted

I see that the download location from this page is the sourceforge page for GParted, that is the "official" download location.

There are 2 versions: iso and zip.
I hope you selected iso. If you have winrar installed on your computer, it is highly probable that it shows both iso and zip as winrar files, together with rar and a lot of other compressed formats. You can check this by deselecting the "hide extensions" parameter in the file explorer options.
In any case, the md5 check shows if it is the correct file wink The calculated result must be the good value for the iso file.

(The zip version is for live usb).

Re: just downloaded gparted

No need to be so nervous  smile
If you chose iso, then you have got the iso. Sourceforge is serious.  cool

If you did a md5 check with the correct result for the iso file, then there is no dubt. It is quite rare to have a broken download with the modern communication lines.

In any case, you risk just a wasted cdr disk. Broken disks in most of the cases don't even boot, so you don't really risk to have a wrong operation done!  smile

What is more important is to be sure that you have a good backup of any important content of the hard disk, before applying any modify operation. That's why I put it in my forum signature!  There is no problem in most of the cases (there are almost 3000 support threads only for 5 years, with many 100000s of users of the software  wink  ) . However, in case something goes wrong, your data will remain safe.

How can it loook like winrar file?? Or I don't get something..

This is just because winrar is installed on the specific system. There are lots of programs that can handle ISO files. Usually, each one on installation replaces previous one in the user's preferences. Nevertheless you can change these preferences, to select your own preference for handling the various file extensions.
winrar can just show the file's content. Infrarecorder can burn it on cdr disc.
