Topic: Trouble Creating New NTFS Partition

Hello!

I used Gparted from the latest Puppy Linux (Lucid) Live CD. Any attempt to create a NTFS partition on my hard disk fails. But I'm able to create a FAT32 partition in exactly the same place. I looked around the net and people had suggested 'Zero'ing the drive. I did 'wipe' my hard disk too. That did not work either.

Can anyone suggest the way to go about this?

Does Pupply Linux have the ntfsprogs package installed?

The GParted Live image contains all of the necessary software to use all of the features of GParted in case you wish to simply try GParted Live.

Perhaps your hard drive is beginning to fail?

Different file system types write metadata to different sections of the partition.  That might explain why you can format the partition as FAT32, but are unable to format it as NTFS.  That would also explain why wiping the drive failed too.

Many disk manufacturers provide software for testing their drives.  You might try this software to test your hard drive.  Often the tests will overwrite your current data so be sure to make a good backup of your data before running tests.

I also had difficulties to create a ntsf partition, while installing ubuntu 11.10

My lappy got 3 primary ntsf partitions (two for windows and one data) and an extended partition.
In the extended partition i created one ext4 partition (root), one linux-swap partition, a ext4 home partition and as last
a  FAT32 partition. ( there was NO option to set it as NTSF)

When i rebooted and NOT install ubuntu, but just use the option TRY ubuntu, i could format the HD
as i wanted, with the NTSF partition as the last one.

Laptop is quite recent, and for sure there are no problems with the hardware or so.
Just to let you know my experience, but i need this thing to work from now.
Probably someone can reproduce it and post it here.

heian, it is better to start a new post with a new issue.   smile

The problem you describe sounds more related to the Ubuntu installer and the packages on the Ubuntu CD than to GParted.
