Trying to format an Hdd to use with a ps3

Hello everyone, I bought a 1TB external HDD to store movies music and photos on and i wanted to play them back through my ps3, it was out of box formated in ntfs, and the Ps3 did not see it when connected, i then reformatted it in fat32, copied a movie on to it to test it, the PS3 now sees the HDD but cannot see the video on it, i then deleted the partition create a new one in fat32, but i still have the same problem, have i missed a step? Can anyone please help
