Topic: gparted locates HDD but neither xp or vista can locate it.

I have a 500 gb HDD which gparted can locate but neither windows XP or Vista can detect anything.

Anyone heard of anything like this before?

It is possible that the HDD does not contain a partition table that Windows XP or Vista can recognize.

If I recall, Windows XP recognizes only MS-DOS partition tables (also known as a disk label).  Windows Vista will recognized both MS-DOS and GPT partition tables.  There are many other partition table types beyond these two.

To see if the physical device is recognized, you could try to start up the disk manager that comes with Windows XP and Vista to see if the disk device is listed.
