Topic: When setting up NTFS partition, what sectors are written to?

I'm hoping somebody can help me understand in detail what gparted did when I setup an NTFS partition with it.  I'm using gparted 0.3.8 in Ubuntu 8.10.  I made one logical NTFS partition that took up the entire drive, starting 8mb into it.

What's the logic behind what sectors get written to?  If somebody can point me at the source code section, I could maybe make sense of that.

I'm trying to recover data from a prior NTFS partition and want to know which sectors have data from before and which have data written by gparted.
