Topic: [SOLVED]PLEASE HELP.. Vista won't boot(have tried Recovery&Vista DVD)

Hi All,

I'm having problem booting up my Vista(Asus W7S Business 32Bit) after using GParted-LiveCD 0.3.4-10. I think I've made a mess myself at the same time. I'm seeking for help urgently as that is driving me mad & I'm losing sleep over it. Your help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Here is the whole story..

I downloaded GParted-LiveCD 0.3.4-10.iso from http://download.tuxfamily.org/gpartedlive/ and burned it into CD using Nero. When I bootep up successfully from the CD, I chose the 1st option, which is "GParted-live CD 0.3.4-10-beta(auto-configuration)". And I pressed 2 times of Enter when it required to Load keymap. Hence I was shown the GParted window. I played with Resize/Move to set my desired settings(C: ~75GB -> ~30GB, D: ~70GB -> ~115GB, figures approcimately). After 6 hours of running the operations, it finished successfully. Hence I clicked Quit from GParted on the menu. Then I noticed that there's a Menu Bar at the top left corner, which consists of EXIT, SCREENSHOT, TERMINAL, GPARTED, INFO and USB. When I clicked the INFO I found out that I didn't follow the exact steps to shrink Vista(!). After this I chose Eject & Reboot from the EXIT. And what I feared most had come, the Asus logo startup screen just kept repeating. I tried to use the Startup Repair(some of the forum members had suggested) from the Vista Ultimate Installation DVD(which I borrrowed from my friend) to fix the problem, but only Black Screen(sometimes with a mouse pointer) was shown after the windows progressing bar. That was the same when I inserted Asus Recovery DVD. I also tried ntfsfix like some members suggested, but it was still the same. I can only boot up from the LiveCD now.

And below are the informations of my current state, hope it helps to figure out my problem. Really sorry as that's a bit long. Thanks..

GParted Window:

** I found no way to run chkdsk as I can only boot up from LiveCD now. When I was shown the Black Screen my fan was running on full speed, I though it was chkdsk running at the background, but after overnight waiting(8 hours), it was still the Black Screen.

That's it. If you need other informations please let me know. And I noticed that I couldn't shutdown properly(have to force a shutdown manually by pressing the power button) if I chose Shutdown from the EXIT. The screen stucked at the line below,

"Remounting remaining file systems readonly...

umount:     /: device is busy                             [!!]

Give root password for maintenance

(or type Control-P to continue):"

I don't know what the root password is and I can't press any key.

I'm such a noob and can only blame myself as I should do more research before using it. Hope to receive your reply asap. Your help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Sorry for my poor english. Thank you so much. Thanks.

Cheers.

Re: [SOLVED]PLEASE HELP.. Vista won't boot(have tried Recovery&Vista DVD)

I see that the problem is now solved. Is this true?

About the shutdown problem, the latest livecd version 0.3.4-11 was just for this. See the "News" in the main Gparted page:
http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/news.php

The message
"...
Give root password for maintenance
(or type Control-P to continue):"
is normal for the program shutdown. It stays like this for about 10 seconds and then it proceeds. If you don't like to wait, you can press Control-P.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***

Re: [SOLVED]PLEASE HELP.. Vista won't boot(have tried Recovery&Vista DVD)

Ya, class413. I was able to use the Startup Repair from Vista Installation DVD and it fixed the problems.

Thanks smile
