Topic: resize primary windowsXP partition...

Hi at all!

Why can't I resize my windowsXP partition (/dev/hda1) ? Gparted liveCD 0.3-1 says "Unable to read the contents of this filesystem!" . This is the structure of the disk:

/dev/hda1 ntfs  boot
/dev/hda2 extended  lba
  /dev/hda5 ntfs (this is modifiable)
  /dev/hda6 linux-swap
/dev/hda3 ext3

please run the following command in a terminal

ntfsresize --info --force --no-progress-bar /dev/hda1

and pass us the output.

The usage of the /f parameter is very IMPORTANT! No modification was
and will be made to NTFS by this software until it gets repaired.

ok, could you do what the message suggests? (Run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot it TWICE!)

and then try again?

Hello!
I wanted to make a new partition to Install Vista RC1 on it. My real os in xp home.
I had the same problem as Aragorn and ran the command but i don't know how i can bring it from dparted to this post. sad
It said I would have at least one "bad sector" and should make a backup and then run chkdsk /f */ and reboot twice. (I don't really remember wat stood there for "*". Maybe "s" but I'm not sure.

Is a bad sector a big problem? Should I buy a new hard drive? I have never heard of that and I had never problems in the  3 and a half years i use it.
What should I do?

Hi, a bad sector is often (always?) an indication your harddisk is failing. Usually when a disk has 1 bad sector, more will follow. I think it's advisable to backup any valuable data and replace the disk.

See the 'badblocks' command for more information.

thanks then I will probably look for another disk. They're getting cheaper.
