Topic: Drive disappears after using Gparted

Hi all,

my first post here. Recently, I used GParted to format a hard drive I have lying around. I plugged it into my computer and it recognized it perfectly. I then ran the GParted live CD to format the drive into a FAT32 partition.

After doing that, I rebooted my computer, but found that the hard drive was no longer recognized by the BIOS and was not auto detected. Also, when booting into Ubuntu (which is on my main drive) and using GParted to look for the drive, I found it, but it was not showing the full capacity of the drive (showing the drive space to be only 1GB while it actually is 15GB) and the space was unallocated.

I'm using the disk as a 2nd IDE master, with my CD/DVD drive being the 1st IDE master and my main hard drive being the 3rd IDE master. The drive that is experiencing the problem is a Seagate Barracuda (model is: ST315324A).

Is there anyway to fix this problem? Thanks!

Hi!

This problem has nothing to do with partitioning - hard drive detection by the BIOS takes plase at a "lower" level.
You should use Seagate's diagnostic utility (Seartools for DOS - can be downloaded from the Seagate website and runs off a bootable floppy) to check you drives' health status. Consideruing the drive's capacity, it seems to be rather old - and hard drives tend to go bad as they age...

Are you sure you gave "apply" command in GParted?
Did you close GParted properly?
Did you disconnect/connect the drive with the computer powered off? IDE disks can't be connected in a running computer as hot swappable scsi drives can.

Hi,
yeah I applied the command but I may not have closed GParted properly. Is there anyway to fix this problem from here on?

Hi!

As I wrote: Check the drive using Seagate's diagnostic tools. There seems to be something wrong with the data reported by the drive to the BIOS and the Linux kernel, so maybe the disc has gone bad.

Did you check another time the jumper? IDE drives need usually to adjust the jumper as master or slave. A disk with the jumper set to master can't be detected if connected to a slave position on the cable.

Hi,

stormhead, I will try your suggestion over the weekend. I am kind of busy this week as I have exams coming up. Will reply once I try it. But will the tools work even if the drive is not recognized in bios?

class413: I am setting the drive as cable select and the bios automatically recognized it as a master before everything happened.
