Topic: Need help in moving/resizing partition on Vista OS

I have an Acer laptop with 80GB HD with 3 partitions.

1st partition: 9.76GB
2nd partition: 32.26GB (C drive) Healthy (Active, EISA Configuration)
3rd partition: 32.51GB (D drive) Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)

I removed the 1st partition using disk manager, leaving the 9.76GB unallocated. I would like to put this unallocated space on my C drive since I only have 8GB left on it. If I move the unallocated space to the end of C drive and then resize C to include the unallocated space, do I need to COPY and PASTE it and then DELETE the original? Or do I just move the unallocated space?

The Copying/Moving with GParted document is unclear since it combines copying to a different drive, and the RESIZE/MOVE is a different button from COPY.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Need help in moving/resizing partition on Vista OS

You have at least two options available to you:

1) You can try out the the partition tool included with Vista to perform the resize operation.
I have heard that it can shrink a partition, but I am not sure if it can grow a partition.

or,

2)  You can use the Move/Resize operation to increase the size of your C: partition.
GParted will then perform the move of your C: partition to the left, and then grow
the partition to use all of the space.

Prior to performing the move/resize, it is best to back up all of your important data.  You just never know when hardware might fail, power might go out, or you encounter a bug in a program.

Some users have run into problems booting into Vista after resizing the boot partition.
One suggestion is to keep a small placeholder partition in the first partition to maintain the number and ordering of partitions.
Another user published an article on how they performed the resize using GParted.  You can view the article at this URL:

Re: Need help in moving/resizing partition on Vista OS

Thanks for the reply gedak. I have read that the resize won't work by resizing to the left, since the C drive is partially filled and the unallocated part is before it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the unallocated part has to be behind the C drive in order to extend the unfilled portion of C into the unallocated part. I have read about the boot problems with Vista after moving the boot partition, so your idea of leaving a "placemark" sounds appropriate. If I resize C to the left, is the unallocated portion literally put on the C drive "ahead" of everything else that's on C, or is it put at the end of C. If it is at the beginning of C, would defragging put everything in order? Also, if I shrink the unallocated space ahead of C to a minimal size, what would happen? Would C automatically expand to that space? Or would I be better off to just extend C to the unallocated space? Hope I am making sense!

You are correct.  To grow a partition, the free space must be on the right side.  That is why in GParted a "grow to the left" is actually implemented in two steps.  First a move of the partition into the free space on the left is performed, followed by a grow of the partition into the free space which is now on the right.

If you have already deleted the partition, then you could create a new small partition at the beginning of the drive as a "placemark" holder.
I believe the reason for leaving a partition in the same slot is in an attempt to prevent Windows from changing the drive letters used for each partition.  In older versions of windows (e.g., Win9x) this was definitely the case.  It may not be relevant for newer versions of windows.

As mentioned above, a partition can only be grown to the right.  Hence the free space is added at the end of the drive.

Defragging your drive prior to resize operations is a good idea.

Resize operations are not permitted on unallocated space.  Hence the only option is to resize C to expand into the unallocated space.

Re: Need help in moving/resizing partition on Vista OS

Thanks again gedak. I have successfully rebooted the computer several times since deleting the boot partition and having just unallocated space to the left of C drive. Disk manager shows only 2 drives (C&D). Do you think that it does not require a "placemark"  to the left of C since reboots have been successful? Also, should I copy the unallocated space and paste it to the right of C and , OR just move it to the right of C?

Re: Need help in moving/resizing partition on Vista OS

Since you have successfully rebooted with no changes to drive letters, then I would say you don't need a "placemark" holder partition.

My suggestion would be to use GParted to resize C to the left.  GParted will take care of the move and grow to the right for you.  :-)

Remember to backup your data.  You just never know when hardware might fail, power might go out, or you encounter a bug in a program.

Re: Need help in moving/resizing partition on Vista OS

Just noticed that disk manager no longer has a drive letter associated with C drive, yet when i explore MY COMPUTER, it shows C&D drives. I have a couple of screenshots, but don't know how to put them in the post.

It sounds like you are still good to try to resize the partition.
