Topic: problem data courrpted on windows vista

Hello
thanks for give me a chance here to describe my problem and I hope you have a solution
my problem is :
1.I have windows vista on 120 gb hard disk which 3 partions
  a. C (operating system disk ) 25 gb
  b. D 20 gb
  c. E  66 gb

2.I have low space on c and I want to extend it I tried to shrink e using windows vista shrink tool
And takes from it about 7 gb . I tried to extend  C on windows vista I discovered that impossible .

3.I search over the internet how to resize operating system disk on windows vista till I found Gparted . (live cd) .

4.I download it and burn it . after booting form it . I tried to extend c  only from the extra 7 gb from E but it does not work the I tried to extend C by shrinking D and the extending it from extra space form E at the end I have 5 operations the first one it to extend E to take the free 7 gb .

5.Its start its operations  it will takes along time I let the pc working an go to sleep

6.I wake up on the morning seeing that the PC was off

7.I start the computer booting form Gparted again to surprised that E is empty there is no data on it
I did nothing .

8.I restart my pc booting from windows vita again . windows vista discovered there is something happened to drive E and start creating index files and other stuff this takes about 20 min I think it create MFT again .

9.When windows log in I found all files on drive E but the catastrophe is all the pictures is corrupted some videos works fine songs when you start a song another song plays or a part of another songs start . I think the windows vista mistaken while taking the beginning of the files .
This makes pictures corrupted and songs mixed .

I hope the description  of my problem is clear and I hope you have solution

Re: problem data courrpted on windows vista

Whenworking with ntfs filesystems, it is better to go step by step, booting into windows after each step for filesystem checks.
In this case I'm afraid there was a power or hardware issue that switched the computer off. This is not happy at all, because it leaves the filesystem in an undetermined state. That's why we insist on the backup necessity, even with the best UPS units connected (we can't prevent a hardware failure). I always noticed that experienced professionals are very conservative on this point.

It seems that vista tried to recreate the file tables from a spare copy on the drive, but it didn't be able to find the right material for each file.

I'm afraid that any recovering operation will be longer and harder than looking again for the lost material, without any success warranty. There is a recovery tool named "photorec" that comes in a live cd, that can work even on broken filesystems looking directly on the hard drive space for files. Nevertheless, there are few chances for successful recovery. File fragmentation makes result untrusty. Furthermore, to check the recovered files, you need to play them all. The only case you could check them fastly is compressed files like zip, rar, 7z etc, because they contain control checksums. So, you would work for days, to get a 10% of the material in the best case. In addition, the "recovery" made by vista, makes any further recovery attempt harder.

*** It is highly recommended to backup any important files before doing resize/move operations. ***
